Eugene Rametta Obituary

Eugene "Gene" Dominic Rametta, 79, of Wallingford, died peacefully in the early morning hours of January 1, 2023 in his home after a long battle with complications from his stroke.

Eugene was born in Wallingford on January 6, 1943 to Carmen and Rose (DeBaise) Rametta.

Gene married the love of his life, Margaret "Peggy" Rametta and they have spent over 60 years together. The inseparable couple have three daughters, Michele Kolios and her husband, Achilles, of South Glastonbury, Jean Casertano of Meriden, and Kristen Rametta of Meriden. Gene will be missed by his three grandchildren, Johansen Wilson of Meriden, Samantha Kolios of Destin, FL, and Rachel Casertano of Meriden, who all lovingly referred to him as Poppy; his great-grandchildren, Mia Wilson and Alaia Wilson will also miss him. Gene also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Paul Stevens and his wife, Paula, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Gene was predeceased by his brother, Carmen Rametta, Jr.

All who know Gene will remember him as the longstanding owner of Rametta's Barbershop on North Colony Road in Wallingford where he started working with his father as a young man. The business celebrated over 65 years of success under his watchful eye where he maintained many of the traditional barbershop customs. His conversations on current events, the Red Sox, or good old-fashioned humor drew customers from across the state. Gene will also be remembered for his passion for his family home in Vermont, where he and Peggy religiously traveled each weekend to pridefully bring their 1800's Stagecoach Stop back to life. He successfully achieved this work with his avid antiquing and restorative efforts. Each day in the Vermont home was filled with woodcutting, projects, and tractor rides.

We are all grateful for the life lessons and many gifts' Gene gave us which included the value of hard work, deep love for his family, and an appreciation for the simple things.

Gene will be laid to rest with his parents in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford in a private service. Arrangements are under the direction of The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., Wallingford.

I met Gene when he was 18. Always good natured, he had a way of using unconventional wording when sneaking-in one of his jokes; maybe a skill picked up from his Dad at the barbershop.

An exceptional man.

My boyhood pal we did so many things together, the only thing I didn´t participate in with Gene was the pigeons, when I came home on leave from the Air Force Gene was the first person I would hook up with to get the local news. RIP Gene. Bill Angelo, Beaufort, South Carolina.

Gene was more than just a wonderful man he was a tradition. My dad, John Fortin was there every 3 weeks, no exceptions. When it was time for my son Johns first haircut my dad came with us while Gene started what would more years of tradition as my dad would take his grandson to the only man he trusted. For all the hours sitting in the waiting area and talking to this wonderful man, I want you to know how appreciated and loved he was. He will be truly missed and fondly remembered.

I have had my hair cut by Gene & Jeannie since moving to CT in 1980. The main two things I will never forget about Gene:
1. The day I walked into the barber shop and he wasn't there. I asked Jeanie where he was, and was shocked when she responded "Mom and Dad are in Italy" ! Truly an answer I never expected.
2. Gene and I had many conversations about the low price he charged for a haircut. I tried to convince him that he should be charging more and save for retirement, but he always maintained that his customers would go elsewhere if he did increase the cost. After several such conversations, he finally raised it by one dollar.

My condolences to the Rametta family, and may Gene RIP.

My thoughts and Prayers for all of Gene's family in the loss of a great man and friend who I have known since we were very young but think the years of wanting the Red Sox to do it were the most comical times with Gene. Our conversations through the years could be a book but always interesting since we both grew up here and knew the same people in Wallingford, but with his passing a era has ended in the long days he spent in the shop on those Strong Legs.R.I.P. My Friend and we will all meet you in the Arms of the Lord.
