Frederick Somerset Obituary

Frederick "Chip" Somerset, Jr., passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the age of 71, at MidState Medical Center in Meriden. Although he was battling cancer and other serious medical issues, he never lost his sense of humor or smile. Despite the pain, Chip came out a hero and stayed strong for his family until the end.

Chip was born in Meriden on January 2, 1952, son of the late Frederick and Lois (Birdsey) Somerset. As a child he worked at the family business, Meriden Landscaping, where he was taught to drive at an early age. He met his wife of 50 years, Marsha (Clark) Somerset in school, married in 1972, and raised three children, Jason, Jeremy and Kristy. Chip graduated from H.C. Wilcox Tech in 1970 with a certificate in Carpentry. He worked as a project manager at Central Connecticut Acoustics in Wallingford for 38 years. In his leisure time he enjoyed watching and attending NASCAR races, mowing the lawn on his John Deere, planning cruises for him and his wife, and most of all, spending time with his granddaughters who meant the world to him. "Papa" was extremely proud of Alex, Gabby, Katie and Sophia and would light up when they visited him.

Chip is survived by his wife, Marsha; his three children, Kristy Somerset-Chiappalone of Cromwell, Jason Somerset of Meriden (Fiancé, Christine Dominello and daughter, Alayna) and Jeremy Somerset of Eden Mills, VT, (wife, Dawn Marie); his granddaughters, Alexandra Chiappalone, Gabriella Chiappalone, Kathryn Somerset, Sophia Chiappalone; his sister, Jody (Somerset) Roberts of Meriden (husband, John Roberts deceased); his cousin, Todd Weyant, who was like a brother to him of Meriden; and many nieces and nephews.

The Somerset family would like to thank their many neighbors who have been caring and supportive over the years. They would also like to acknowledge the excellent care he received during his time at Apple Rehab Coccomo in Meriden. Chip was blessed with many good friends.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext., on Thursday, March 16th from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. His funeral service will be held at 6:00 pm in the funeral home. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Mausoleum, 250 Gypsy Ln., Meriden, on Friday, March 17th at 10:00 am. www.wallingfordfh.com

Chip was a great Neighbor for many, many years. I enjoyed chatting with him many times. We both would be cleaning our pools in the summer, and cutting our lawns back and forth as we were both pretty particular on how they were kept, looked. He would always talk of his Grandchildren and how they lit up his life. He will be missed but its good to know he is not suffering anymore. He often told me that the Drs would say he was like a cat- having 9 lives. Our thoughts & prayers are with the family....

I will always remember my cousin Chip as friendly and kind. Many backyard celebrations and Christmas Eve at his parents are fond memories. He was a devoted husband, father and son who loved his entire family. My sincere sympathies to Marsha and their children. Gone too soon. Kimmy.

Marsha and family, we are very saddened at the loss of Chip. As we all go back many years this is very heartbreaking news. From High School to working together for 21 years, all of our side jobs, our small business together, our get together's and long conversations, this all made for many wonderful memories. RIP Chip Sure hope you have a comfortable lawn chair in Heaven!!
