Jack Sundberg Obituary

Jack Gunnar Sundberg
March 2, 1933 - May 1, 2025
Jack Gunnar Sundberg, at the age of 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at The Connecticut Baptist Home. During his final years, he battled Alzheimer's, which took his memories away, but now he has found peace and can remember all who loved him dearly. Jack was the cherished husband of the late Maryalice (Ward) Sundberg for a remarkable 65 years and son to Bernhard and Karin (Nilsson) Sundberg, both of whom preceded him in death.
A talented design engineer, Jack left a lasting impact at Chandler Evans and Colt Industries, where his ingenuity led to multiple patents on fuel and hydraulic pump systems for F-15 Jet Fighters. His multifaceted personality shined through his love for baseball, golf, skiing, fishing, coaching, artistry, and his fondness for western movies. Jack was as adept in riding waves as he was in being a family man. He shared his life with Maryalice, raising six children together. Proudly known as "Papa," he embraced his role as a grandfather to 18 grandchildren, always eager to share tales from his baseball days or teach them the art of poker. His exceptional achievements in baseball earned him a spot in the Upsala College Hall of Fame and Meriden Sportsman of Distinction Award.
Jack is lovingly survived by his children: Jack Sundberg and his wife Kathleen, Scott Sundberg and his wife Kathi, Sandy Gonzalez and her husband Ruben, Steven Sundberg and his wife Kelly, and Julie McDermott and her husband Dan; 18 grandchildren: Craig, Christie, Kurt, Katie, Lindsay, Kelley, Margaret, Jack, Scott, Mark, Jake, Max, Colby, Courtney, Shelby, Danny, Quintin, and Grace; and three great-grandchildren: Kathryn, Remy, and Hadley. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving daughter, Jill Margaret Sundberg, and his siblings: Sonja Wright, Bernice Nurczyk, and Carl Bernie Sundberg.
May his legacy and love continue to inspire and be remembered by all those he touched during his lifetime.
Jack's family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., on Monday, May 19th, from 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Joseph Church, 22 Goodwill Ave., Meriden, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to Connecticut Baptist Home, 292 Thorpe Ave., Meriden, CT 06450.
