Jean Kong Obituary

PLAINVILLE - Jean Kong, 67, of Plainville, wife of James Kong, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016, following an illness that she faced with much dignity and strength.

Born in China on Dec. 13, 1948, she was the only child to the late Chow Tung Chun and Hom Hing Gwong. After moving to the U.S. at age 11, she resided in Newington, where she graduated high school, and went on to earn her bachelor's degree in mathematics from St. Joseph College in West Hartford. Jean and James settled in Plainville where they raised their three children, and owned and operated the Great Wall restaurant downtown for 10 years. Jean went on to work for the Hartford Insurance Company for the next 23 years, after which she retired. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother to her five adored grandchildren. She will also be remembered for her love for reading, gardening, previously working part time at the Plainville Public Library, and cheering on the UConn women's basketball team.

In addition to her husband, James, she leaves her son, Colin and his wife, Grace; her daughters, Erin and her husband, Gerald, and Kelly and her husband, Adam; her five grandchildren, Christian, Emelia, Geoffrey, Andrew, and Emily; her extended family and many friends.

A memorial Mass in celebration of Jean's life was held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Broad St, Plainville. Committal services followed at St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. In lieu of flowers, Jean's love for reading may be remembered with contribution to the Plainville Public Library, 56 E. Main St., Plainville, CT 06062. Plantsville Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling arrangements. For online condolences, please visit www.plantsvillefuneralhome.com.

She was very smart. Jean was fashion -conscious. She raised her family right. I miss her terribly. Hi to Christian & all the other children in the family. (We're not coming home this year--James.) Tryon & Terry

Hello family,
We were saddened to hear of Jean's passing.
All of us at St. Joseph's University who were
her friends would share laughter and the concerns of becoming adults. We will remember
her spirit and courage, as well as treasure
the good times. I also remember her as a beautiful bride in red. Our best.

We will always miss her. I hope, they will raise their children as she raised her children...we will see her again. They were brilliant, all of them. Maybe, that was her calling/to raise her children as she did...A good one gone, but not forgotten. Tryon & Terry/ san francisco
