Louis Caliendo Obituary

HAMDEN - Louis Caliendo, 54, of Hamden, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford. He was the beloved husband of 27 years to Kathryn Kallert Caliendo and loving father of Carly M. Caliendo and Doug L. Caliendo.

Lou was born in New Haven on June 2, 1961, son of the late Jerry and Marie Balash Caliendo.

He is survived by sisters, Maria Fiorentino (Robert), Madeline Piasecki (Charles Jr.) and Kathleen Caliendo; son-in-law of Fred and Phyllis Gamache Kallert; brother-in-law of Susan Kallert Kerrigan (John) and Paul Kallert (Deborah Scarpellino). He was also a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews as well as their children. Lou obtained a bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut State University and later obtained his plumbing license from Eli Whitney Technical School. He worked for his family business, Caliendo's Plumbing & Heating, Inc. for many years until his illness. He was a member of the Hamden Knights of Columbus and also a long time member of its golf league but most of all his life was dedicated to watching and supporting his son play hockey.

Family and friends were invited to St. Rita Church, 1620 Whitney Ave., Hamden on Thursday, Feb. 11, to attend a Mass of Christian burial and were also invited to attend the committal services at All Saints Cemetery. The North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., was entrusted with the
arrangements.

His family would like to thank all the wonderful people at St. Raphael's Hospital who were involved with his care for so many years. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to: Cancer Research Institute, 1 Exchange Plaza, 55 Broadway – Suite 1802, New York, NY 10006 (cancerresearch.org).

Dear Kathy,
An enduring pair you and Lou are... remembering back to middle school, what a contented, smiling couple. As others have said, all these years later my snapshot of Lou is of a gentle, kind soul. And yet clearly, strong and courageous. I think of you both often, and hope your life moving forward is warmed by the many memories of your time together. Peace and Love from Kristen

Kathy,

I just read the beautiful letter your son wrote. It was on Facebook, I think it was posted by Andy Porto. I knew immediately you had to be Doug's mom.

I am so sorry for your loss. I am sending prayers and thoughts of strength your way at this difficult time. I am sure you are comforted with the knowledge that Lou is looking down on you and you family with love.

I now live in Vermont. My three children either graduated from college or currently in college. I remember you fondly from our years teaching at Hamden Middle School and High School.

Love,
Sarah Hadden

Our hearts are broken by Lou's death, who I watched grow up from infancy. I attended all his milestone celebrations, i.e. christening,Communion, Confirmation, birthdays, even his wedding. He was always right there helping us with his plumbing & heating expertise whenever the need arose. I could only describe Lou's mannerisms, character, etc. as that of a perfect gentleman at ALL times. The respect Lou possessed & always exhibited was unique, especially in today's generation. Never did I hear a derogatory remark about anyone come from his mouth. He was gentle, but masculine and so very SPECIAL. As Lou's cousin Gino said, he can't "imagine the future without Lou on this earth." Lou will be missed by ALL.

One of the good guys......growing up in the Hill Street area , it felt good, just to be around Lou, whenever i ran into him a big handshake, a smile, and a story from when we were younger..they dont make em like this anymore. I will remember him fondly.
