Mary O'Brien Obituary

BOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Mary Marotti O'Brien passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011. For 68 years she was the beloved and devoted wife of Tom O'Brien, who passed away May 29, 2010.

Mary was born in Southington, on Oct. 27, 1922, to the late John and Rose Marotti. She was a longtime Meriden resident, attending local schools. Mary and Tom married and raised their family in Meriden. Mary made lifelong friends working at New Departure during World War II, while Tom was in the Coast Guard. After working in the Platt High School cafeteria for several years, she became a familiar face waitressing banquets at Sun Valley Acres and the Cabin Restaurant. When they retired, Tom and Mary "hit the road" with their camper and enjoyed many trips to Florida and a very special adventure across the country to San Diego and San Francisco, Tom's home ports during the war. Since Mary loved music, they also made several trips to enjoy performers in Nashville and Branson. Mary was devoted to Tom and their family of 4 generations. Like her mother before her, Mary especially enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She will be fondly remembered for arriving at their homes with home-cooked food, always made with that special ingredient "LOVE"

Mary is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Mary and John Nadwairski, of Boxborough, Mass., her home for the past two years; and her sons, Tom and wife Dee (Sicard,) of Woodstock, Vt., and John and wife, Doreen (Ford,) of Southington. Mary was the cherished "NAN" to John and David Nadwairski and Ashley, John, Jacquelyn and Bridget O'Brien; three great-grandchildren, Tyler and Cole Nadwairski and Jessica O'Brien; Mary is also survived by her brother, Bill Marotti; her sisters, Rose Nelson and Lillian LeFebvre; many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to Tom, the love of her life, she was predeceased by her sister, Josephine Buck; and her brother, John (Sonny) Marotti.

A longtime parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Mary's funeral will be held there on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Calling hours to celebrate Mary's life will be on Friday, Nov. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden.
On weekdays for the past year, Mary has benefitted from the company of friends and the caring attention of the staff at Cooperative Elder Services at their Concord location. She immensely enjoyed her 89th birthday celebration there. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Mary's name may be made out to Cooperative Elder Services with memo line notation "Concord Activity Fund" and mailed to Cooperative Elder Services, 9 Meriam St., Suite 28, Lexington, Mass., 02420.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mary and her husband Tom for many years. Mary served the local bar association when we met monthly at the Cabin all through the 1980s and into the mid 1990s. Of course, whenever my wife and I would have dinner at the Cabin, we would sit at Mary's tables. In later years, I had the honor to represent the O'Briens in their legal matters.
They were always full of life and optimistic about the outcome of every problem. I enjoyed my time with them and miss them both.
