Uncle Al,
I´m thinking 1972 Greenfield. Some hippie was selling recycled building materials. You were loud, annoying, and really funny. 50 plus years and 10 cars. Valley Forge, book reviews, and 3 hour breakfasts. Then a year-today-of strange silence. Looking forward to talking with you in the morning.....

I should click on `friend´, "work" and `customer´...
I met Al in early 70s when he had the lill shop acc from the now recycler in S. Greenfield. He hada yard full of the `leaning tower' or slant 6(s). I bought my 1st car from him (my dad bought the other 2 & 1/2 before then) a 1964 Dart wagon. I was a poor GCC student so it did fine (ie passed inspection). He kept that junk runnin (the worse kinda job: rusty, broken, dirty) and even transplanted it´s motor into a newer one when engine blew up on the 91 near Brattelboro. The ´64 was havin trouble passin inspection so the ´66 got it´s motor. The ´64/66 took me around to all the parimiter states in this here big ol USA & onto to grad school in WVa (300K mi on the speedo). Out of Al´s reach the last 2 yrs of that but I came back (3040 yrs later) to wrench for a local shop. Al was all ways there for answers to automotive Qs like where to find a certain part.
I said "See you in a few..." after doin a podcast for GCC in the Fall. I kept tryin to stay in touch by e-mail but that Spring he no longer answered. I tried to get him in for another 'cast as his was the most listened to of them all at that time. Lill did I know...
Here it is for those who´d like to hear his voice again:

So sorry to read the news. Al and I started Kindergarten together in Street School. We all called him "Rimmy." He always wore khaki clothes and was very good in math. The family lived off north Main St New City. He had even more separation anxiety than I did starting school. I remember that his mother was allowed to sit near him for a time. I believe that his father sold jewelry because whenever there was a birthday party Rimmy always gave (to the girls) something like a charm bracelet.
I recall one time walking around the the school yard at recess being amazed by his lengthy tale- which I now realize was a 'tall' one, about something like a glob that came to life and grew and covered things. Oh, yes, and he often had a bloody nose.

Albert was in my high school class, CCHS, graduating in 1965. I was just 12 days older than him. We shared many rubbers of bridge together in those early years and I always enjoyed his company and humor. Always remember him laughing. Wish I had known he lived less than an hour away from me for the last few decades. RIP.

I only knew Al over 20 years or so as a customer. I'd call him every 4 or 5 years when the last winter car he sold me was on its last legs. Wed talk. Honest, earnest, intelligent, trustworthy. He was, indeed, one of a kind but we sure could use more like him.

Al, you were a great neighbor and friend for over 30 years. Our closest neighbor, the only house we can see. We kept an eye out for one another (and our respective cats) for many years. Rest in peace.

Al went to Cornell 4 engineering if I´m not mistaken. Brilliant. My go-to-guy for tidbits about any particular make/model. A fount for idiosyncratic strength/weakness in cars & socio-political dynamics. Thoughtful in Xmas cards & Bday wishes. Heaven has gained an earthly legend.

My family and I will miss Al immensely. He had such a wealth of automotive knowledge and was always willing to help us with car repairs or car purchases. He was a truly unique individual. Blessings to him and his family.

I didn´t really know him but met him a few times when directing friends there to get a reliable, affordable car. I remember his place and I remember him. A true original, of whom it might be said, "They don´t make `em like that anymore." The Valley has lost a great resource and an interesting man. Condolences to the family.

Society as lost a great companion who will be greatly missed. An Impossible void to fill. Someone whose intelligence soared along with his great heart toward any struggling underdog. A person of tremendous humor and understanding. Big Al is gone ... it seems impossible to accept! Thank you, Al, for all you have been. It was nearly 50 years my pleasure.
