Albert Stoddard Obituary

PELHAM - Albert H. Stoddard Jr., 98, of Harkness Road and formerly of Athol and Warwick, died peacefully on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at the Center For Extended Care in Amherst.
Born in Athol on September 25, 1917, he was a son of the late Albert H. Stoddard Sr. and Bertha (Emmett) and attended schools in Athol and graduated from the New Salem Academy in 1937.
In 1937, Albert married Freda (Rhodes) and they have enjoyed 78 years of marriage. Albert had built two homes for them, one in Warwick and one in Pelham.
One of three partners of Boiler Equipment Trust, he worked there until they sold the business in 1976. He had previously worked a couple years at the Norton Company in Worcester, as well as for the L. S. Starrett Company in Athol. Following retirement, Albert began making crafts and was a very talented woodworker and made a lot of scroll work. He also worked part time for HRD Press in Pelham up until about 2 years ago, assisting with maintenance and operations.
Albert started in 1949 as one of the founders of encouraging the building of the Pioneer Valley Regional School in Northfield, which opened in 1957.
While living in Warwick, Albert also served as a Selectman, chaired the Warwick School Committee, was a constable and worked on the building of the town's fire station. After moving to Pelham, he served as that town's building inspector.
Albert was a 50-year member of the Harmony Lodge A.F. & A. M. Masonic Lodge in Montague.
Albert was a great golfer, loved fishing and camping, and enjoyed gardening and bee keeping.
The family is grateful for the wonderful care Albert received at the Center For Extended Care in Amherst.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Freda Stoddard of Pelham; daughters, Joyce Hubbard and her husband, Walter, of Royalston, Kathryn Thurber of Oregon, and Brenda Scott and her husband, Jerry, of Northfield; grandchildren, Laurie, Wayne, Keith, Scott, Carrie, Heather, Jeffrey, Shelby, Melissa, Todd, and Matthew; 25 great grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
There are no calling hours.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 11, at 2 p.m. at the Warwick Center Cemetery, Orange Road (Route 78) in Warwick.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Athletic Fund, c/o Pioneer Valley Regional School, 97 Sumner Turner Drive, Northfield, MA 01360.
Witty's Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is directing the arrangements.

I think about him SO often and my daughter just passed along the puzzle he made for her, to her son -- who is now old enough to put it together. So, he continues with us into yet another generation.
Love,
Andrea

Dear Freda. So sorry to hear of Al's passing. A true friend. I will always remember a fishing trip several of us took to lake chibougamau in Quebec years ago. We all caught our limit of beautiful walleyes and became well acquainted with our fishing buddies during a week of tenting at bag bay. Al and Charlie wentworth were the early risers and had breakfast started for us. I will pray for you Freda and your family as long as I live. Ed pelland
