GREENFIELD - Edward ""Eddie"" P. Smith, Jr., 73, died peacefully Tuesday 5/31/16 at the Buckley Health Care Center in Greenfield. Eddie is survived by his brothers; Terrance Smith of Glendale, AZ, and Lawrence Smith and his wife Ellen of Suffield, CT; his sisters, Catherine Smith of Greenfield and Paula Beaulieu and her husband Dr. John Beaulieu of Swampscott, MA; Eddie is also survived by his many nieces and nephews, Terrance (TJ) Smith of Glendale, AZ; Cathleen Markowski and her husband Christopher and their son Christopher of Agawam, MA; Eileen Smith of Vernon, CT; Maureen Smith of Suffield, CT; Angeline Driggers, serving in the Navy in Japan; Thomas Smiley, Jr. and his wife Alyssa of Danvers, MA; Michael Smiley of South Boston, MA; John Beaulieu of Syracuse, NY; and Allison Beaulieu of Manhattan, NY.
Eddie was predeceased by his father, Edward P. Smith, Sr., of Greenfield. His mother, Catherine M. Smith of The Arbors died peacefully just 12 hours after Eddie.
Eddie was born on June 29, 1942, in Lowell, MA to Edward and Catherine Smith. He attended Keith Academy in Lowell, continued his education at Lowell Technical Institute and went on to graduate from Suffolk Law School in the 1970s, after deciding to pursue a career as an attorney. After moving to Greenfield, Eddie began working for the Town of Greenfield as an attorney and also held a private practice on Main Street. In addition to serving the town for over 30 years, Eddie was a member of the Thomas Moore Society of America and was awarded the St. Thomas More medal by the Archdiocese of Springfield for exceptional legal service. Eddie was an active mountain climber and cyclist and enjoyed traveling and fly fishing. He was especially proud of his nieces' and nephews' athletic and educational pursuits and encouraged their successes. Friends and family will always remember his as a kind, generous and loyal brother, uncle and son.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday 6/3 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield with Monsignor Ronald Yargeau officiating. Burial will be held Saturday at St. Jospeh's Cemetery in Tewksbury, MA.
A calling hour will be held Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kostanski Funeral Home, 220 Federal Street, Greenfield.
