Michael P. Pollen

Leyden, MA - Michael Phillips Pollen, age 74, of Leyden, passed away peacefully at his home in Rhode Island on September 23, 2023. Born in Northampton on July 23, 1949, he was the son of the late Everon and Dorothy (Cate) Pollen. He attended Williamsburg schools and graduated from Pioneer Valley Regional High School. He spent time working in Minnesota as a Future Farmer of America, before joining the United States Navy in 1970. A Quartermaster on the USS Nitro AE-23, Mike used the stars to navigate the open seas. Mike had fond memories of his time with the Navy, and often told stories of his travels. One of his favorite places was Greece, where he remembered eating the best Greek salad while overlooking the Acropolis.

Mike served his country for four years before moving back to Western Mass and settling down in Leyden. He worked for several local construction companies as a heavy equipment operator for the Local 98 Union of Operating Engineers. He managed the Granby Quarry for Ted Ondrick, before retiring in 2013. Shortly after retirement, he spontaneously bought an RV and hit the road with his loyal canine companion, Chester. They traveled the country, visiting historic sites, panning for gold, gambling at casinos, and just enjoying the open road. One of his favorite memories on the road was seeing the Blue Ridge Mountains at sunrise. He spent several winters on the Gulf Coast in Biloxi, Mississippi, enjoying the local food and the Mardi Gras parades.

Mike enjoyed telling stories of his travels, reading, metal detecting, and going out for ice cream. He was a wonderful and loving father to his daughter, Stephanie. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. Mike is survived by his daughter Stephanie and her partner John; his former wife Noreen Pollen; two sisters, Barbara Cate and Diane Watts; several nieces, and a nephew. He is predeceased by his sister Marianne Creek, and his brother Richard Pollen.
