I had a dream the other night I was back in Porterville and visited St. Ann's. Everything was different and all the old class photos in the main hallway of the old school building were nowhere to be found. I decided to go visit Mike at the barbershop, but couldn't find it. When I woke up in the morning, I knew this had been a message about Mike so I looked online and found his obituary.
Mike was my best friend during 8th and 9th grade until my family moved East in the fall of 1966. We spent alot of time hanging out, having sleep-overs, and doing what boys that age do. His brother Randy was often a part of our adventures. Mike turned me on to The Tijuana Brass and Simon and Garfunkel. I shared Chad and Jeremy and the Beach Boys with him.
Mike's Dad, Tino, was the best barber in Porterville and always cut my hair. Somewhere I have pictures of Mike and I in that barbershop - The same shop Mike and Randy wound up working in years later.
Mike and I stayed in touch for a few years until his auto accident, and then we drifted apart. The last time I saw Mike (and Randy) was when I drove through the night from Las Vegas and dropped by the barbershop unannounced. I'm glad I did that.
We didn't keep in touch in our adult lives, but I always thought about Mike and his family over the years. He was a great guy, a good friend, and maybe even turned out to be as good a barber as his dad was.
My heartfelt condolences - although belated - to Mike's wife, Mary; To his children and grandchildren; and to his sister, Cynthia, and brother Randy.
Note: The photo is of St. Ann's class of 1966. I'm on the bottom right, and Mike is above me - just as he is now and forever.

I dont know the family but I have a theory all Montoyas in Texas and California are related. We all tend to have boys and name our kids Michael, Mary, David, Jon and Ruben. So my heart really does go out to the family. And I'll be praying for them regardless if we're related or not.
