Constance J. Spanos

August 8, 1926 - April 17, 2009

Constance J. Spanos, 82, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2009. Known affectionately by her family and friends as "Connie", she was born to Demetrios and Sarah Nitsos and raised in Oakland, CA, along with her sister Doris.

After graduating high school in Oakland, Connie moved to Stockton to attend the College of the Pacific (now UOP) and joined the sorority, Delta Gamma. That's where Connie met her future husband, Peter Chris Spanos; who was introduced by her sorority sister, Mary Spanos (Pete's Sister).

In 60 years of marriage with Pete, Connie was a dedicated wife and mother of three children: Gary, Vicki and James. She enjoyed being an involved mother at home, a Sunday School teacher and as the children grew up, she worked for Roose-Atkins.

Connie's commitment to love, serve and help people who were less fortunate was fulfilled as an active participant not only in her Orthodox faith but also as a loyal, dedicated member and eventual president of the philanthropic group of her St. Basil's Ladies Philoptochos Society. Her time and effort to lend a hand to those who were in need, especially those who were confined to their homes, was borne out of this love Her devotion to serve others was appreciated by the people she shared her time with.

Connie was predeceased in death in 2007 by her husband Pete. Connie is survived by her 3 children: son, Gary (Kathleen) Spanos of Lynchburg, VA; daughter, Vicki (John) Papachristos of Stockton and son, Jim Spanos of Stockton, in addition to her 4 grandchildren: Christina, Alexis, Sarah and Daniel, as well as sister-in- law Mary Maehl (Gus) of Orinda, CA and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Greek Orthodox Trisagion service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, at St. Basil Church at 920 March Lane in Stockton. An Orthodox funeral will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24, again at St. Basil Church. Internment will follow at Stockton Rural Cemetery. A Makaria lunch will be served by the Ladies of the Philoptochos in the church hall following internment.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the St. Basil Ladies Philoptochos Society c/o St. Basil Church, 920 W. March Lane Stockton, CA 95207. Chapel of the Palms Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Dear Gary, Vickie and Jimmy, My thoughts are with you. Your family was like my second family all those wonderful times in Pinecrest. Your mother was a great lady, she was always ready to listen and be supportive and loved the underdog.

Aunt Connie...your compassion, and unconditional love set the theme for many to move forward in their own lives and seek the treasure of living as you did so beautifully. Your offerings of human kindness and social and community generosity have gone mostly unhearlded as you set the example for the gift is truly in the giving. The lives you touched, the paths of many your altered, the differences you created for those who otherwise would not have had, speaks volumes to the quality of life you led. You embossed our paths with this gold and we are grateful.

Dear Vicki, My deepest condolences on the passing of your Mother. Although its been decades since I last saw her and for that matter you and your brothers, she was a great lady. I recall her offering me her garage so I could repair my Porsche. Your Dad was interested in how soon I was going to be done and Connie said "when he's finished" She also was a great cook! Wow! I remember eating a lambs head and thought I would not like it, to the contrary, it was great. To you and your brothers, again, my heart goes out to you.
