I truly miss Professor Hicks! He was such a special person, so warm and kind. So different from typical academics--he reached out to everyone. I remember fondly our lunches together at NYU.

Academics too often lose touch of each other given the madness of the profession. I did my first professional panel with David, who was a wonderfully generous and kind man and excellent scholar. I visited him at NYU, where he was good friends with everyone, including the janitorial staff. A very special person, who was kind to those he did not have to be kind to (like me).

I am a former student of David Hicks from NYU class of 1999. I have warm memories of our classes, and sometimes meeting him in his office. He was a wonderful person.

Professor Hicks was a glorious person who helped me dearly while I was a student at NYU. I was experiencing a tragic loss in my family at the time, and his door was always open. I spoke with him often and he was the warmest and kindest person, not to mention a world-reknown expert in medieval Italian history. It was a joy to know him. May he continue to rest in peace with all the angels of Heaven around him.
