Donald Karkos Obituary

Donald J. Karkos, "Don" to all who knew and loved him, died on Monday, January 29, 2007 at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. He was 82.

A retired employee for the Avon Company in Suffern, Don also worked at the Rockland County Community College, as well as the Monticello Raceway.

A devoted family man, Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He was born in Lisbon Falls, Maine on December 12, 1924, the son of the late John and Anna Ivancho Karkos.

Don was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines, serving in World War II on the S.S. Park Benjamin in Europe. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #2973 of Suffern, the U.S. Trotting Assn., and the Monticello Harness Horsemen's Assn.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 18 years, April Adams Karkos, at home; five sons: Dan Karkos and his wife, Karen of Fredricksburg, Va., Matt Karkos and his wife, Lorie of Cochecton, John Karkos and his wife, Dana of Middletown, Nick Karkos of Parksville, and Michael Gilmour of Vernon, N.Y.; three daughters: Deborah Karkos of Centreville, Va., Jean "Taffy" Hazlewood and her husband, Don of Madison, Ala., and Janet Messenger and her husband, "Nee" of Monticello; 13 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

As per Don's wishes, funeral services are to be held privately, and at the convenience of the family.
