Fred Novak Obituary

Beacon, NY

Fred H. Novak, a Beacon resident, died at his home in Beacon on Saturday, July 5, 2008. He was 82.

Born in Passaic, NJ, he was the son of Alfred P. and Freda L. Kohler Novak. He married the former Anita Klein, who preceded him in death in 1990.

He was a career soldier, serving during WW II and Korean Conflict and played in the United States Military Academy Band, West Point from 1954 until his retirement on September 1, 1968. He then attended and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a BA in Music Therapy. He later worked at Hudson River Psychiatric Center. He considered himself a professional musician and volunteered with several musical organizations. He played at the Vanderbilt Historic Site, Hyde Park, and several other venues. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Newburgh.

He is survived by his two sons, Glenn Novak and his wife, Shelia, State of Florida, and Frederick Novak and his wife, Bronwyn, Red Hook; his two daughters, Karen Novak, Hyde Park, and Christine Novak, Palmer, MI; and his best friend, Maria Mersinger, Beacon, and her son, Thomas.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow St., Beacon.

A Funeral Service with Rev. Ernest A. Mossl of Christ Lutheran Church officiating will be 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, at the funeral home. Interment will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, at West Point Cemetery with Rev. Mossl officiating.

Donations in memory of Mr. Novak may be made to Hospice of Dutchess County, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
