I just discovered that Herb passed away, 5 years after the fact. I was about to send him an email about a funny coincidence that I thought he'd appreciate.
Herb was my photography professor at Queens College, and convinced me to take workshops at the Germain School of Photography when he was the summer program director in 1976. That's where I met Peter Moore, who I would end up working with for 8 years when I joined the editorial staff of Modern Photography, and Walter Chandoah, an animal photographer who taught me much about the business of photography.
Most importantly, that summer Herb introduced me to Garry Winogrand, who profoundly changed my direction as a photographer. Herb told me to take Garry's workshop. "He'll turn you around 180 degrees!" he said to me--and he was right.
The last time Herb and I spoke must have been in 2017 or 2018, He was proposing a project and wanted to know if I'd like to be involved and I said yes but never heard back. During that conversation, he revealed that he'd been following my career over the years--which totally surprised me. "The student's accomplishments have surpassed the teacher's," he told me.
Whenever I needed a boost of confidence as a young photographer, I knew I could count on Herb for words of encouragement and mentorship. But to hear such remarks as I hit 60? That was both unexpected and wonderful.
It was good to have Herb Goro in my corner. May his memory be a blessing for all who knew him.
