I’ll always remember when he used to take me and his grandchildren to McDonald's for $0.50 when I was little. And, the way he’d hold me and laugh while I’d tell him my made up stories, and then how he’d crack me up by dancing and singing those old Southern ditties. The way we'd shadow box before bearhugging each other after church services.

And I have tons of memories of those adventurous long car rides to church Upstate every Sunday, and how we’d sometimes end up swerving the long way home because he was following an airplane. It's kind of funny how interested he was by the planes considering how much he hated to fly.

And I remember how he often spent time trying to sing hymns and spirituals through his weak hoarse and cracking voice. If I gave him an odd look, he’d say, “Sweetheart, I know I can’t sing. My pipes don’t work like they used to, but the Lord says, ‘Make a joyful noise,’ and that’s what I’m doing.” Then he'd continue singing and praising until his tired voice would give out. And then even after his voice was gone, there were still whispers of his trademark "amens" and "praise the Lord" were mouthed.

I appreciate all of this. I'll always remember the love he expressed in his hugs, cares, and prayers.

He was the minister I needed and granddaddy I always wanted.

I’m grateful for having had him in my life.

My Dear Sister Austin and Family
We are so sorry to learn of the homegoing of Reverend Austin. Yet we do not sorrow as those who have no hope for we know that he is present with our Lord. We are just returning to town and will not be with you but our prayers for God's comfort and peace are offered.
