Cousin Jim,
You will always be remembered as someone who was dedicated to his family and his community. Thank you for always being there, and for truly being an example for others to follow. No matter what hat you were wearing for the day, you were never too busy to help out, or to stop and and just say hello- and I'll never forget it. You're now a part of that elite squad in Heaven, fighting fires with JB and Uncle Pete. Be strong, Barbara and Janice- may God bless you both.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Butler's passing. I had him as a 5th grade teacher and can honestly say I have incredible math skills due to his math drills. I remember recorded times table quizzes and how challenging they were. He was a strict teacher but held command and respect of his classroom. We knew he was also a policeman so that probably helped. Reading his accomplishments revealed many things about him that I did not know. Condolences to his family. Be proud that your dad impacted so many people, including this woman, a student of his from over 50 years ago.

I had Mr. Butler for Math in 5th grade and English (I think) in 6th grade at Center-Annex school in Seymour in 1968/69. So, he was a youngish teacher then and in retrospect, amazingly progressive for the time. Back then in many ways girls were treated differently than boys when it came to education and social norms. For instance, the boys were allowed to play certain games on the playground that girls were not allowed to participate in. However, I remember him as a math teacher who did not differentiate and that was the beginning of me knowing that it was ok for a girl to like and do well in math and raise my hand if I had the answer. It took me years to appreciate how differently that might have gone. I just wanted to pass that on to Mr. Butler's family and friends as something that might not have been as present as his career with the Fire Department. Likely, he influenced many children's lives in a significant way as an educator. My condolences to all who were close to Mr. Jim Butler at this time and through your grieving.
