Sabina (Pidgeon) Shapiro, 73, died suddenly at her Middletown, New York home on April 3.
Sabina was a Training Specialist in the Staff Development Unit of the Orange County Department of Social Services. She retired in 2019 after 47 years of service. Before her retirement, she held board of director positions in the public employees labor union Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA), culminating as president of CSEA Local 838 and CSEA Unit 7900/7902. She was also on the board of directors of the Audubon Society of Orange County and was a very effective fundraiser for Audubon and SUNY Orange (formerly OCCC).
The daughter of Andrew and Rita (Healy) Pidgeon, Sabina attended Middletown public schools and graduated from Middletown High School. She graduated from the State University of New York - New Paltz with both undergraduate and Master's degrees.
A lifelong learner, Sabina was an avid reader and particularly interested in speaking foreign languages and learning about religion. She was a devout Catholic and active congregant at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Middletown, as well as other area Catholic churches. Additionally, she was an active congregant at Temple Beth Shalom of Florida, New York. Recently, she participated in Mt. Carmel Bible Study and studied the Hebrew language through Temple Beth Shalom.
Sabina was married to Norman Shapiro in 1978 until his death in 2013. She is survived by her step-daughters, Joan Shapiro of Cheshire, Connecticut, Judy Shapiro of Ann Arbor, Michigan, their respective husbands, Luther Turmelle and Tom Snoblen, and step-grandsons, Zachary Turmelle of Philadephia, Pennsylvania, and Jacob Turmelle of Jerusalem, Israel. She also leaves behind a close circle of friends.
Due to the pandemic, funeral services will be private. A memorial will be scheduled for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Orange County Audubon Society online at www.orangecountyaudubonsociety.org or by mail to P.O. Box 1286, Warwick, NY 10990.
