Carol Toland Obituary

Carol Toland

Palo Cedro, CA

Carol Mathews Toland, 78, of Palo Cedro, CA went to heaven June 27, 2017. She was born May 29, 1939, second daughter of the late Henry G. Mathews and Mary Sumner Mathews in San Pedro, CA.

She grew up in Lomita, CA where she developed her love for horses and spent her formative years with her now lifelong friends and late husband, Larry Mason Toland. She attended Narbonne High School in Torrance, CA and was top of her graduating class, then entering Whittier College where she studied biology. It was after this point that her childhood love, Larry and Carol were married. When they became young parents they chose to move to Northern California in 1964 where they lived the rest of their years in Palo Cedro, CA. She was a wonderful and loving mother of daughters Laurie L. Toland and Pamela D. Toland.

Carol went back to school at that time and was among the first graduating class from Shasta College of Registered Nurses. She was suited for the field of nursing with her deep compassion and intelligence and was employed at Mercy Hospital. With the upcoming addition to the family she left the hospital after giving birth to her third child, Collin M. Toland. She taught her children and grandchildren how to be strong, kind, appreciative of life and loved each of them so dearly that she selflessly gave to all. Carol was a woman who could befriend a complete stranger and be dear to their heart in a matter of one encounter.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents Henry and Mary Mathews; her sister Marianne Mathews; her husband Larry Mason Toland; and her son Collin M. Toland. She is survived by her sister Susan M. LeVier of Redding, CA, her daughters Laurie L. Toland, of Palo Cedro, CA, and Pamela D. Toland, of Grass Valley, CA; as well as her grandchildren Holly Horan of Willow Creek, CA, Mason Edwards of Houston TX, Emily Horan of Anderson, CA, Adam Horan of Redding, CA, Hannah Edwards of Seattle, WA and Grace Horan of Palo Cedro, CA.

Allen & Dahl of Palo Cedro are handling arrangements including visitation at the mortuary Monday 2-4:30 pm, July 10, 2017. There will be a graveside burial at Millville Cemetery, Tuesday July 11, 2017 at 5:30 pm. We invite all who have been touched by Carol in their lifetime to celebrate her passing to the heavens where she is now embraced by all her loving family who await her. We welcome you to both the service and her home to follow.

Laurie and Pam you were much too young to remember but your mom and I graduated nursing school together and helped open the ortho department at Mercy in 1968. Your mom was always the go to when anyone needed help or a good pep talk. A kinder or more compassionate person could not have been found. I hope you ladies have been blessed with that same outlook on life as your mom had. Very sorry for your loss and the loss of everyone who had the good fortune to have met Carol.

Laurie, Pam, and family: We were so sorry to hear that Carol is gone, she was a darling woman and was always so kind. She raised some great children. You are so blessed to have had such a wonderful woman in your life. What a wonderful and sweet lady she was, her legacy lives on with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be missed. ~Love Debbee and Mollie Winegar.
