Douglas Harguth Obituary

Douglas Lawrence Harguth

Redding, CA

1940 - 2018

Doug-Devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.

With purpose and passion Doug lived his life to the fullest with vigor and enthusiasm.

Doug peacefully passed away Saturday, March 31, 2018. His loving wife, Melba Virginia (Hammon), son, Jim, life-long friend, Bob and special neighbors were by his side. Doug's courage in his plight for survival will always be respected and honored.

Doug was born in Clara City, Minnesota on October 23, 1940. Born to Henry and Alice Harguth, Doug was one of four siblings. Many close relatives still reside in Minnesota.

Doug enlisted in the U.S. Navy January 1958 and served on the U.S. Coral Sea carrier Heavy Attack Squadron II. He received a Good Conduct Medal for service in January 1961 and an Honorable Discharge in October 1961. Doug always reflected on fond memories while serving in Cuba. Doug remained in contact with many of his military brothers until his passing.

After serving our country, Doug was employed by Safeway Stores as a truck driver and teamster for twenty plus years. Doug's loyalty was not only exemplified to his country and employer but also his family and friends.

Doug married the love of his life, Melba Virginia on November 2, 1964 and celebrated that eternal love of 53 years this past November. They raised two sons, Steven (predeceased) and James Harguth. Doug was a doting grandfather to Cassidy Harguth and beloved brother to Darrel and Vern Harguth, Marilyn (Bellanger) and Kathy Grunwald, many nieces and nephews also completed the family.

The depth of Doug's friendship circle was a broad net going back to his childhood, military and the good ole' days in the Bay Area. It wasn't uncommon for Doug to drop everything to help his friends and family. His thoughtfulness and expressions of compassion to those in need always brought a sense of calm and healing.

Doug will be deeply missed and remembered by those who knew his humor, zest for life and giving to those in need. This morality carried through by serving his community as a volunteer at Turtle Bay Exploratorium and the Veteran's Home in Redding.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery, Igo, CA on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 2PM.

In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation to Wounded Warriors Project.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Doug. I have known Doug for 50 years and his fun-loving personality never wavered. He will always be known to me as Dougie Poo. Along with his wife, Virginia, and my Auntie Doreen and Uncle Bob we shared a fantastic trip to NYC and an East Coast cruise to Canada. So many wonderful memories of a great guy! We will take good care of your bride, Virginia. Rest in eternal peace my friend until we meet again.
