I had Mr Barlow as my art teacher in my sophomore year and senior year. That was back when nova was still the ninth grade high school. My brother ( rick Hemenway) ten years my senior, was also a student at Central Valley high. He loved Mr Barlow and made many beautiful things in his class. When I came to his class as a sophomore in 1981 and he had asked me if I was Rickies little sister. He remembered my brother after 7 years.. Mr Barlow taught my brother and myself the love of art. He was in fact my favorite teacher at CV! I chose to take his class twice. I would have taken his class all three years at CV, but wasn't able to in my junior year. He taught me so much and was an amazing man and artists (even tho he did make me angry at times) lol. Only because he would circle in red pen my mistakes lol. But that was his way of teaching and I wouldn't have it any other way! I couldn't wait for 7th period. He was truly amazing and I wish I had gone back to visit him. I wanted to so many times, but life got busy. That is one of my regrets.. I'm sorry for your family's loss. Mr Gary Barlow (who taught so many the joy of artistry) may he rest in peace.. I will never forget him!

I was lucky enough to be in one of Mr. Barlow's classes in his first year at Central Valley High. He was just one of the guys to most of us but was an excellent teacher and extremely fair. After I kinda blew off a required project that didn't interest me, I came up with an interesting jewelry style of construction that he had never seen (at least that's what he claimed) and he said he would give me a passing grade on the skipped project in exchange for showing him my technique of how to get the results I achieved on the jewelry. I always considered him one of my better teachers and enjoyed returning for visits after my graduation, and to give him updates on how my pursuit of art in my college education was doing.
I know he had a great family that really cared for him because years later our daughter had his daughter Kristi as a teachers aide at Project City School in the Central Valley area. It is indeed a small world. Both my wife Linda and I have regrets about the loss of Gary, and hopefully they will take solace in knowing how many people his life touched and improved.,
