Leonard Carrick Obituary

Leonard Warren Carrick, D.D.S.

1923 - 2013

Leonard Warren Carrick passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013.

He practiced dentistry for almost 60 years, most of which was here in Shasta County where he was blessed to touch the lives of many wonderful people. Caring for patients in his office or assisting in dental surgery was a great joy in his life.

Leonard was born in Portland, Oregon on June 24, 1923. In 1927 he and his parents moved to San Francisco where his father served as the minister at St. Johns Presbyterian Church. He had two younger brothers.

Leonard and his wife Bette were married in November of 1942 and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in November 2012. He entered the College of Physicians & Surgery during World War II and served in the Army while training for dentistry and graduated in 1946.

Early in his youth, he learned to set type on his dad's Golding Printing press. Writing became a passion and later in life he became a member of the American Amateur Press Association. Known as Carrick's Antique Printing Press, using a C & P printing press, he published hundreds of stories about his life and adventures in monthly publications known as Shasta Ramblings and Ginger Snaps.
He learned to fly in 1952 and bought a two-place Cessna 120. In 1958, he moved up to a 1956 Cessna 172 which he flew thousands of hours. Leonard was a member of the Shasta County Sheriffs Flying Posse in Fall River Mills.

Leonard is survived by his wife Bette, his three children; David Carrick of Casper, WY, Jan Bourhill of Poulsbo, WA, and Melissa Kassahn of Roseville, CA. He was a proud and happy grandfather to six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Leonard was a member of the Burney Lions club for many years and later joined the Redding Breakfast Lions Club upon moving to Redding. The family requests that any donations be given to the Redding Breakfast Lion's Club in his name.

Betty, David, Jan and Melissa: Your dad was a wonderful man, and not only did I have the pleasure of having him as my dentist for many years, my kids did as well. Our family always looked forward to our dental visits. My folks became good friends with him and he always treated us so kindly. My mom always looked forward to his Christmas card that he so proudly made. Cherish all the fond memories you had with him. Sincerely, Bill and Marilyn (Callison) Bailey

I will miss Doc Carrick and his musings of many things particularly of our Lions Club. Many times, you would wonder if he was kidding (which was often) or serious. He was a good man.

I only knew Doc for the past 3 years when I became a member of the Redding Breakfast Lions Club. I remember the first few weeks of my becoming a member he made a point of trying to make me feel comfortable around the other club members. He was a lot like my Dad...never met a stranger...the most friendly, generous guy around. See you on the other side Doc. Lion Dave Simpson

Dr. Carrick was a wonderful man and my dentist for 30 years. Every visit was a treat and like I was his only patient. I loved all our chatty times! He taught me for every complaint you make to a business you need to remember to give positive feedback to someone who provides good service – which I follow to this day. He met me at his office on a Saturday and a Sunday for a dental emergency. What a wonderful person that I am proud to have known. Hugs to the family – he talked about you a lot! I put Dr. Carrick right up there in the same category as my Dad! A true legend!

Bette and Family, We (Henny & I) met "Doc" in the late 70's to early 80's, I was a young man in my 30's who thought the world of "Doc" with his wisdom and guidance, he brought me through some tough times. Then into the 2000, our laughter with his emails just warmed our hearts. It was an honor to be a member of the Redding Breakfast Lions Club with him. He will be missed greatly by the two of us. Heaven just received one great Angel!

My condolences go to Bette and Family. Dr. Carrick was our family dentist since 1953, and was considered to be a special friend to us. He was the only dentist I had until I moved to Idaho 9 years ago. I have many fond memories of going to school with his children in Burney, and all the kidding he did. My Dad liked to tease, and he enjoyed knowing someone who could tease as much as he did. The care and generosity Dr. Carrick gave to his patients and to the community will be greatly missed. May God bring peace to his family during their loss.
Sincerely,
Peggy Hemphill Burgess

“Doc” was a great friend and mentor to me. I got lucky back in 1981 when I called him for advice on how to run my new one treatment room dental office. The advice never stopped and our friendship grew. He was a master at the art of printing and writing, flying and dentistry but his best skills were figuring out ways to cause mischief and humor; and getting people to do his bidding without them knowing it. Bette, Melissa, Jan and David you had a great husband / father who will be missed and fondly remembered by those of us who had the pleasure of knowing him.
