Robert Harold McKean

ReDding, CA

1929 - 2017

A kind and gentle man, Robert Harold McKean, age 88 of Redding, died Sept. 22, 2017. He was born Sept. 16, 1929 in McCloud, California, to Harold and Vivien McKean. He graduated from McCloud High in 1949 and attended University of Oregon in Eugene.

Bob was inducted into the Army in 1951 and served with the U.S. Honor Guard in Japan until 1953 being honorably discharged in 1956.

Bob worked at the mill in McCloud. Then in 1956 became a salesman for Main Lumber Co. In 1971 he went out on his own as McKean Lumber Co. In 1972 he joined in partnership with Lewis Cattanach, Jr., and purchased property on Iron Mountain Road that became L&B Lumber & Milling. He eventually bought out Louie and expanded his own company across the road to mill and sell fencing material. He retired in 1998.

Bob was respected in the lumber industry and was selected "Lumberman of the Year" in 1978 by Shasta-Cascade Hoo-Hoo Club #133, and was Redding Trade Club's "October Citizen of the Month".

Bob enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing and walking for his health. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Betty (nee Coyle); son William (Renee); nieces Gail Fritz, Jeane Mitchell and Cheryl Simons; grandchildren Misty, Rochelle and Bradley.

Private "Honors" ceremony and internment will be at the Veterans Cemetery in Igo.

Bob was a cherished cousin. May he rest peacefully. God be with you and the family, Betty.
I believe that I am the last 1st cousin left in the family! This leaves me very sad!

Dear Betty, I am so sorry for your loss. When I started working at Main Lumber Co. in 1957 as a Shasta High School student in the Work Experience program I was so impressed with you and Bob, both individually and as a couple. You were both so kind to me. Bob's calm peaceful presense was always comforting to a teenager new to the business world. Especially in an atmosphere of competitive stress such as the booming wholesale business in those days. Because of your patient mentorship, Betty, I was hired as a regular employee when I graduated from highschool. I will be forever grateful, to both you and Bob, for taking me under your wing. I learned much under your guidance. I'm sorry I was never able to tell Bob..so I am making sure I tell you. Thank you both. Ann
