Daniel Griffis Obituary

KINSTON - Daniel Bickett Griffis Sr., 82, of Kinston, passed away Thursday, Jan, 26, 2006. Memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today in the chapel of Howard-Carter Funeral Home with Pastor Howard Scott officiating. Visitation will follow the service. He was born Sept. 19, 1923 in Wake County to the late James and Ella Hare Griffis. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, co-founder and charter member of the Kinston Exchange Club, and served on the Board for the Lenoir County Home Builders Association. Mr. Griffis was a retired District Manager with N.C. Natural Gas where he received the President's Award three times. He served in the Pacific with the Army Air Corps during WWII. In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his sisters, Paula Atwood, Margaret O'Neal, and Rebecca Wimberly; brothers, Jim Griffis, Dillon Griffis, and Joel Griffis; and his beloved daughter, Dianne Griffis Wells. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ramona Cannady Griffis of the home; daughters, Glenda G. Sutton and husband, Jeff, of Kinston and Phyllis Rowland of High Point; son, Daniel B. Griffis Jr. and wife, Susan, of Farmville; grandchildren, Tiffiney Wade, Dionne Seale, Kelly Kilpatrick, Danielle Gaetano, Daniel B. Griffis III, Cameron Wells, and Wrenn Wells; nine great-grandchildren; and his best friend, Guy Skinner of Kinston. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of Britthaven of Snow Hill for the many kindnesses shown to Mr. Griffis and the family during his illness. Visitation will follow the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 220, Raleigh, NC 27605-1351 or to the Kinston Exchange Club, c/o Jack Bell, 1690 Hill Farm Road, Kinston, NC 28504.
