GREENVILLE - Douglas Howard Finestone, 72, died Friday, September 5th, 2025 in Greenville, North Carolina surrounded by family. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but spent the majority of his childhood and formative years in Clifton Forge, Virginia. A man of great honor and principle, he was also a loyal son, beloved father, dedicated brother and uncle, and respected psychiatrist. He received his Bachelor's degree with distinction from the University of Virginia and attended medical school at the Medical College of Virginia, followed by residency at Duke University, where he was honored to be chief resident. He was also a proud psychoanalyst who completed his training at the University of North Carolina-Duke Psychoanalytic Institute. He served as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Duke University and as a Professor and Director of Education at the East Carolina University Department of Psychiatry, where he enjoyed teaching and advising medical students and residents. After leaving academia, he worked in outpatient psychiatry for more than 20 years, initially as a partner in a private practice and more recently in telehealth. Throughout his career, he served as a principal investigator in many studies, authored numerous presentations and publications, and was honored to be a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He was also extremely dedicated to his patients. He helped innumerous people throughout his years of service and only recently retired. His most valued role in life was being a devoted father. He loved his daughters and sons-in-law immensely and received an enormous amount of joy from being a grandfather. He shared a special bond with each grandchild and was excitedly awaiting the birth of his fourth grandchild. He valued his family greatly and was a protective brother and involved uncle. He also loved his black lab, Prudence, who was his constant companion. He loved with all his heart, all his soul, and all his might, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
