Frederick Klutey Obituary

Frederick Ernest (Fred) Klutey, Jr.

GREENVILLE - Frederick Ernest (Fred) Klutey, Jr., 83, passed away on November 30th at the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice, surrounded by family.

Fred was born and grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of Frederick Klutey, Sr. and Cornelia Chichester Klutey. He graduated from St. Andrew's School in Middletown, DE, and obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Clark University and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, respectively. While at Penn, he met his future wife Kathy Morrissey, and they soon began a wonderful 53 year journey together.

Shortly after getting married, Fred and Kathy moved to Kinston and started a family. Fred worked for the DuPont Company for over 35 years, playing a key role as the company introduced computers into the finance organization. Outside of work, he was a regular at his children's extracurricular events, coaching basketball and serving as president of the Kinston Swim Club in its formative years. He also participated in sports himself, playing basketball with his grandchildren until his late 60s and capturing several DuPont tennis titles. Fred enjoyed applying his mechanical skills to projects ranging from building a substantial portion of the family beach cottage to maintaining a vintage VW Beetle.

After retiring, Fred and Kathy moved to Greenville in 1998, where he became a volunteer at Vidant Medical Center. Known as "Mr. Fred" by scores of volunteers and hospital staff, he escorted patients and installed home medical alert systems for the elderly for 15 hours/week over 20 years. In recognition of his service, he was named the Guy Watkins Volunteer of the Year for Vidant in 2013. After joining St Paul's Episcopal Church, Fred readily volunteered for everything from manning the Halloween pumpkin patch to cooking pancakes for Shrove Tuesday. In retirement, Fred became even more involved in the lives of his four grandchildren, attending sporting events and school functions, hosting them at the beach, and taking them on trips.

Fred was predeceased by his wife Kathy, his parents, and his sister Anne Klutey Aquadro. He is survived by his daughter Anne Klutey Fisher and her husband Frank of Greenville; son Rick Klutey and his wife Maria of Ridgefield, CT and four grandchildren: Will Bogey of Arlington, VA, Kristen Bogey Dodge and her husband Paul of Greensboro, Andrew Klutey of Ridgefield, CT, and Tucker Klutey of Brooklyn, NY. He is also survived by his two step granddaughters, Mary Lyda Fisher and Sally Fisher.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2:00 pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vidant Health Foundation, 690 Medical Drive, Greenville, NC 27834, or St. Paul's Episcopal Church, PO Box 1924, Greenville, NC 27858.

I'm sorry to hear of Mr Klutey's passing. I am a former resident of Kinston and swam with Ann when we were both much younger. I remember her Dad well at swim meets. I'll pray for your family.

I am so very sorry to hear of Mr. Klutey's passing. I had the pleasure of getting to know and working with he and Mrs. Klutey while they were volunteers at Vidant Medical Center. They were both wonderful people and volunteers. He will be greatly missed.
God's grace and peace to the family
