George LeBlanc Broussard

Mr. George LeBlanc Broussard, 73, passed away in the Palliative Care Unit at Vidant Medical Center on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.

A funeral Mass will be held at 12 pm Saturday, March 18, 2017 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Greenville, NC.

George was born in Lafayette, LA on June 10, 1943 to Roy August and Annie Mae Leblanc Broussard, who preceded him in death. After graduating from Scott High School (LA), he received the Bachelor of Music Degree from University of Southwestern Louisiana and Master of Music Degree from Northwestern University. He is survived by his wife, Sherry, his two sons, George Philip LeBlanc Broussard and his wife Whitney of Boston, MA and Luke Douglas LeBlanc Broussard and his fiance; Megan of Asheville, NC, and a sister Amelia and her husband James Higginbotham of Lafayette, LA.

George was an accomplished trombonist and jazz artist who taught at Jacksonville State University, AL prior to coming to East Carolina University School of Music in 1972 where he taught trombone, ECU Jazz Band, and ECU Jazz Bones as well as Jazz History. After 40 years as an instructor, performer, and mentor he retired from ECU as a Professor Emeritus, but remained active performing with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Tar River Orchestra, Tar River Swing Band, International Trombone Association Cramer Choir, and numerous small jazz groups.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. He also was a member Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Mu Alpha and the Kiwanis Club.

George touched the lives of many who will miss him, and will be remembered for his kindness, caring, gentleness, and man of deep faith.

The family will receive friends in the cafeteria at St. Peter's School after graveside ceremony at Pinewood Memorial Park.

Mr. B and Phil and Luke lived close to use and my son spent much of his high school life hanging out at the Broussard home. Blake (my son) told me that I could not imagine how much Mr. Broussard had done for him. I can only thank him for his kindnesses. I last saw Mr. B. outside the music building on ECU's campus. He had played the night before at Mars Hill College. He was a gentleman and a great lover of jazz. I thank him for his kindness to my son and all of the many other people he helped.

We, as musicians, people, and educators owe him a debt, and I hope that we can truly pay it forward in his honor. I will miss you, but will see you again, my brother and friend.

Sherry, I taught both Phillip and Luke in 2nd grade at St.Peter's and always enjoyed talking with George. My 18 year old grandson, Owen Norton, has gone to ECU for their Jazz Camps and may go there to study Jazz next year. Music connects us forever!
