James is preceded in death by his mother, Annie Letchworth Garris & father Ashley J. Garris of Kinston; brothers, Robert E. Garris of Kinston, A.J. Garris of Washington, Milton Lee Garris of Ayden; sisters, Jean Waters of Kinston and Gladys Pierce of Ayden. The family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. We kindly request that guests join us in celebrating James's life during the designated times at Elm Grove OFWB Church instead of visiting the family home. Your understanding and compassion are greatly appreciated.
James is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jennie Lou Garris of the home; son, James Douglas "Doug" Garris and wife Shauna of Durham; grandkids (the apples of his eyes), Lyndsay Christine Garris, Jameson Frederick Garris & Benjamin Douglas Garris all of Durham; sisters, Ruth Mason & husband Robert James, & Mary Bissett & husband Jerry of Oriental; brother-in-law, Mitchell Oakley and wife Dottie of Ayden, and Danny Oakley and wife Vickie of Grifton; special friends, Phil & Stephenie Evans of Ayden, Jeff Jones of Ayden, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. The family would also like to thank Jeff "Porky" Garris for all his help during James's illness.
