Jamie Stokes Obituary

Jamie Gray Stokes
GREENVILLE - Jamie Gray Stokes, 93, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
The funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 pm at First FWB Church. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at Pinewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 1 to 2 pm.
Jamie, son of the late Oscar and Lucy Stokes, was a lifelong resident of Pitt County. He grew up in the Ayden community with many siblings and was taught the value of hardwork and integrity from a young age. These are traits he carried throughout his life and modeled for all of those that met him. In 1952, Jamie married "Mamie Ruth" and they had one daughter, Hilda Gray. He and Mamie lived a life of love focused on keeping Christ first and at the center of their almost 72 years of marriage.
Throughout his life, Jamie held many jobs and was always thinking of what he could do next. He retired from Greenville Utilities after nearly 32 years of service. Following his retirement, he and Mamie spent their days selling and delivering furniture for their store, Jamie's Furniture. Jamie enjoyed meeting many people from the community as they would shop or visit with him for over three decades. When not working in the furniture store or his mini storage, you could find Jamie cutting grass or spraying roundup. He worked hard to keep everything looking nice.
Jamie was a longtime member of First Free Will Baptist Church, nearly 70 years. For over 42 years, he had perfect Sunday School attendance. Jamie served as head usher and loved his church family.
Jamie was kind, honest, hard-working, disciplined, and a follower of Jesus. "Husband", "Daddy", "Granddaddy", and "Pa" will be dearly missed by his loved ones that he considered to be his most precious gifts in life. They now celebrate the fact that he is healed and at home with Jesus.
In addition to his parents, Jamie was preceded in death by his siblings, William Stokes, Ethelene Jarman, Margie Stokes, Joyce Cannon, R.C. Stokes, Audrey Wainwright, and twin brother Jimmy Stokes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mamie, who cared for him throughout his sickness, honoring their marriage vows; daughter, Hilda McGlohon (Paul); grandson, Bryant Beddard (Katie); granddaughter, Melisa White (Bradley); great-grandchildren, Anna Kate and Corban Beddard, Jackson and Abby Piner, and Emma White; sister, Jean Turnage (Bobby); and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank those from Pruitt Hospice that loved and cared for Jamie, especially Keisha. Also, thank you to his church family for the outpouring of love and support during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First FWB Church, 2426 S. Charles Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858.
