Sue Meyer Stewart Obituary

Sue Ann Meyer Stewart

WINTERVILLE - Sue Ann Meyer Stewart journeyed on into waiting opened arms on the evening of June 19, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones.

Born in 1952 in a tiny coastal village on the southern coast of Maine, Sue learned to handle a rowboat before she even rode a bicycle. She grew up on the beaches near Wells and the Nubble Lighthouse, where she and her young friends shared high adventures lobstering and fishing for haddock.

Later, she became a motorcycle buff, before her two boys were born, cruising the Maine country side on her Suzuki 350. Sue's career choices varied over the years and included bookkeeping, furniture restoration and providing transportation for the elderly and disabled.

In 1991, Sue met and committed her life to Lorraine (Raine) Sullivan, beginning many years of shared dreams, hard work and devotion. In 1995, Sue suffered a traumatic brain injury after being hit by an 18-wheel truck running a red light just outside of Ayden, NC. In spite of the most dire prognosis, Sue persevered and with faith and hard work she was able to regain the use of her body and mind again. She went to court and got her right to vote back and proudly voted in every election since. She succeeded in being able to stand again and re-taught herself to write and throw a ball again. She was a pretty good third baseman in her younger years.

She enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels that frequented her bountiful feeders; keeping count each day of how many came. She also loved the television game shows and watched every Golden Girl program ever made over and over again.

Sue will be forever missed and remembered by her family members as well as by all the many friends who met her and fell in love with her easy smile and open heart.

She was preceded in death by her mom and dad, Herbert Meyer, II and Edith Brookes Meyers; sister, Winnefred; and brother, Robert Meyer.

She is survived by her son, Jason Mark Stewart, of Grifton; partner of 27 years, Dorothy Lorraine (Raine) Sullivan; son, James Michael Stewart; brother, Herbert Meyer, III; and sister, Joyce Meyer Roark, of Maine. She will also be greatly missed by her extended family of Sullivan's and Umphlette's and especially by her "second mama", Dorothy U. Sullivan and her "Aunt" Linda Umphlette.

Entombment will be held Monday at 1 pm at Homestead Memorial Gardens. Please dress casually.
