Alma Frazier Obituary

GALESBURG - Alma Fitzpatrick Frazier, 99, of Galesburg, died at 9:55 a.m. Nov. 5, 2020, at Seminary Manor.
Alma was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Durhamville, Tennessee, to Louis Clarence and Rosie (Beard) Fitzpatrick. She married Harvey Frazier on May 2, 1967.
She is survived two daughters, Gloria Owens, of Paducah, Kentucky, and Vicki Sibley of Galesburg; and one son, Steven Maxwell, also of Galesburg, all from previous marriages; one stepdaughter, Maxine Frazier of San Antonio, Texas; one stepson, Robert (Brenda) Frazier, of Lima, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Hardin LaVonne Yarbro, from a previous marriage; a stepdaughter, Shirley Beacon; a grandson, Michael Owens; and a beloved son-in-law, Rev. Jon A. Sibley Sr.
Alma graduated from Lovejoy High School in Mound City in 1935, took extension courses from SIU-Carbondale, Illinois, and classes at Carl Sandburg College. She was employed as an elections clerk and as a manager in the Office of Economic Opportunity in Metropolis. She also worked as a clerk at the Department of Motor Vehicles (driver's license facility) in Galesburg. Alma volunteered as a receptionist at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis. She also volunteered in various church offices and was the financial secretary at her former church. She was a homemaker for many years. She was a faithful member of Full Gospel Church of Galesburg.
From childhood she memorized and frequently recited the last stanza of the poem "Thanatopsis" by William Cullen Bryant:
"So live, that when thy summons comes to join the innumerable caravan, that moves to that mysterious realm, where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death, thou go not, like the quarry slave at night, scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."
Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Services Galesburg Chapel. Graveside service immediately following at East Linwood Cemetery, Pastors Mark and Debbie Dexter officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Full Gospel Church, 719 W. Knox St., Galesburg 61401 or to the Galesburg Community Foundation, c/o Rev. Jon A. Sibley Sr. Fund, 246 E. Main St., Suite 101, Galesburg (Please make checks payable to Galesburg Community Foundation with Rev. Jon Sibley in the memo line or give online at yourgcf.org).
