HARRY GARBUS Obituary

GARBUS, DR. HARRY On the first anniversary of his death, the sons of Dr. Harry Garbus remember their beloved father, a longtime dentist in Winsted, CT, who passed away on March 10, 2015 at his home in Pompano Beach, FL. He was 100 years old. Harry Garbus was born in New York City on Aug. 13, 1914 to parents Frank and Gussie (Briar). The family soon moved to Hudson, NY, where he grew up and met his childhood sweetheart, Beatrice Maskin. They were married in 1939. Dr. Garbus received his DDS from the The Ohio State University in 1940. They had two children together: David, of Prince Edward Island, Canada and Steven, of New Haven, CT. Dr. Garbus followed his brother Al to Winsted and established his dental practice there in 1940. He enlisted in the US Army in 1943 and rose to the rank of Captain in the Dental Corps assigned to the base at Newport News, VA until 1946, at which point he returned to private practice in Winsted for the next 45 years. Dr. Garbus was involved with his community and his profession throughout his life. He was Chairman of the Dental Dept. of Winsted Memorial Hospital, a guest lecturer at Northwestern CT Community College and the Fones School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Bridgeport. He was an avid member of numerous CT and national professional dental organizations. A member of the American Legion, a Mason and an Elk. With his family, he was a dedicated member of Winsted’s Temple Beth Israel. Harry was an enthusiastic golfer, to say the least. He was a past president of the Greenwoods Country Club in Winsted and a member of other golfing associations, as well. There was probably no golf course anywhere on the east coast that he didn’t play at least once, along with his many golfing buddies. He was finally forced to give the game up by a shoulder injury at age 95. Dr. Garbus retired from dentistry at age 70 and moved with wife Beatrice to Pompano Beach, FL, where they immensely enjoyed retirement. Beatrice passed away in 1999. A couple of years later, Harry found love again and married Sandy Greenfeld. He lived a whole new life with Sandy until her death in 2013. In spite of his age, Harry remained amazingly mentally and physically active and involved with friends and family until the end. We love you and miss you, Daddy. Rest In Peace.

Thank you for such a beautiful tribute to your father. Harry was a very important part of our lives before and during his marriage to our mother Sandy. He was warm, caring and beloved by everyone who met him at our daughter's high school and college graduations. He brought so much joy to our family and was a loving and devoted husband throughout our mother's illness until the end of her life. We miss Mom and Harry very much, but we are thankful that our lives were enriched by their generosity of spirit and their happiness.

DR GARBUS WAS MY DENTIST-AS A CHILD, I HAD A WIRE FROM A TOY DRUM STUCK IN MY TEETH-HE HAD TO TAKE IT OUT BUT NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS SCARED OF DENTISTS BECAUSE OF THAT. DR G WAS A GOOD DENTIST AND A GOOD FRIEND TO MY MOM LILLIAN MELE. HAD A CUTE SMILE.

Some of my fondest memories growing up was playing golf with your dad and my dad (Dr Don Daly), George Telford, Bob Sullivan, Stan Stazowski, and the rest of the "boys". But your dad in particular was one of my favorite guys. He was always encouraging, no matter how poor a day I had on the course. I think that, to this day, I can still mimic that golf swing of his! My condolences on the loss of a wonderful man.
