Evelyn passed away August 27th, one week after celebrating her 93rd birthday. She was surrounded by love. Two of her four children were with her when she passed away. She is now resting peacefully with her Lord and Savior.
Evelyn was the fourth child of nine born to George McCabe and Clara Heagy McCabe in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was delivered in the living room by a midwife. Evelyn finished ninth grade and then went to work to help the family. When she was 19 she became a telephone operator and that is where she met Harold Shannon. After a three month courtship they married in a trailer house owned by her sister, Isabel and husband, Wesley Baldry in San Leandro, California. Three days after getting married, the Navy shipped Harold overseas. Evelyn went to live with her parents in Eugene until he returned home from the war.
Together they built a home in Eugene, Oregon. After a time they moved to Lynwood, California for Harold's work. They then moved to Redwood City, California where Harold was a machinist and a lay minister and Evelyn worked in the church. She taught cooking classes, was a greeter at the door on Sabbath, worked at Levy Brothers Department store as a gift wrapper where she was very highly thought of. She was the best wrapper they had ever had. Evelyn also worked in later years as a housekeeper. She kept a very beautiful home and always decorated and had lovely meals for every occasion.
Together they had three children. They then took in a very dear foster son, Barney who quickly became part of their family and who is loved dearly. Our parents loved everyone and everyone loved them, they had a beautiful life together for 50 years, 5 months and 14 days before Harold passed away in 1994.
Evelyn will always be remembered for her bright wonderful smile, wonderful cooking and always preparing for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to come home for the holidays. She loved playing cards with her brother, Ken and sister-in-law, Patti McCabe.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Elaine, sons Ronald (Judy), Kenneth (Arlene), and Barney, 17 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren, 3 sisters, Vivian, Shirley and Janet, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers (David, Andrew and Kenneth) 2 sisters (Isabel and Florence), son-in-laws: Joe Cahoon Sr. and Chuck Sallas; and 2 great-grandchildren, Benjamin J. Moresi III and Christian Sallas.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Rest Haven Memorial Park, 3900 Willamette Street, Eugene.
Donations in Evelyn's name may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart or Amazing Facts.
