Joel Paul Dorland

1952 - 2006

Joel Paul Dorland died suddenly in Eugene, Oregon. He was 54. He was born in Pocatello, Idaho on June 22, 1952.

Joel had a different path in mind for his life's journey and along the way he touched many lives. As a young boy, Joel would walk miles from his grade school in Anaconda, Montana to be alone with nature. He loved to hike and fish with his older brother, James. He would join his younger brother, Tim, on visits to Tillamook County to camp and enjoy the sea air. His older sister, Joan, always helped to keep Joel connected to his family during hard times. His sister, Jude, called Joel "Honey Boy" as a baby and will remember him always as that beautiful little boy with the shy smile and gentle heart.

Although his life was filled with many obstacles, he was able to make a life and community for himself with the help of friends and dedicated professionals. He was known to have a dry sense of humor and became a role-model for many struggling with a similar path. He had become an inspiration to his friends left in the Eugene area.

He is preceded in death by an older brother, John T. "Jackie" Dorland, and his parents, John T. Sr. and Elizabeth "Beth" Dorland. He is survived by his sisters Joan E. Wiseman, of Milwaukie and Judith Welter of Oregon City, and brothers James M. Dorland of New Mexico, and Timothy J. Dorland of Freehold, New Jersey.

A Mass will be said for Joel at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eugene, Oregon on August 10th, at 12:15 p.m. All are welcome to attend who knew and cared for Joel.

Remembrances can be made to the charity of one's choosing.
