Ken Shulman Obituary

Ken Shulman, a man who loved life and who considered everyone his friend, passed away from unexpected causes connected to sleep apnea at his home on Friday, August 3, 2007, at the age of 51. Ken was known for his great sense of humor, friendships all over the world, and the ability to ignite a room with his humor.  He also took great pleasure in helping others – always without seeking recognition.

Ken received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Oregon and lived in Eugene for 28 years, and spent the last ten years with his wife, Linnea. He was the owner of Ken Shulman Painting, Inc., a commercial and residential painting company. Ken is fondly remembered by his classmates as one of those uniquely brilliant people who rarely attended law classes but was able to read the materials on his own and score brilliantly on the exams. Although Ken had great legal skills, he chose instead to work with people and express his gifts through his premium quality paint jobs and ability to connect with workers and customers. He recently started a successful real estate business in La Paz, Mexico, and dreamed of retiring on a hillside there with his wife.

Ken's group of friends includes people from all walks of life, and he had the ability to bring a diverse group of friends together, and make everyone feel comfortable. Ken never judged people by their outward appearances and yet, he was no pushover. He was independent, felt strongly about personal rights, and would passionately engage in debate about politics (his keen memory of history always put the discussion to his advantage). Ken also loved sports and for years was competitive on the softball field, bowling leagues, and supporting his kids in whatever endeavor they chose.

While Ken loved Eugene and would work non-stop in the painting business April through September, his true love was Mexico.  He was known to many people as the "Mayor of Puerto Vallarta" because of his outgoing nature and frequent trips there. Ken had boundless generosity, particularly with those who were hardworking, but struggling to make ends meet, whether they were friends, employees, or acquaintances. In fact, he was so generous with beach vendors in Mexico, many would bless him when they saw him on the street. Ken didn't seek recognition for his generosity, simply enjoying the opportunity to be of assistance.

Ken was a loving and supportive father figure to four step-children and was proud of the accomplishments of each of them. He also loved his dogs (calling them "my babies") and spoiled them rotten always looking for a reason to give them treats.

Ken approached his painting business as a craft. He had a very high standard for himself and others and rewarded his employees for a job well done. One of the ways he did so was with a Happy Hour every Friday at his house where the Beck's beer flowed freely. He was known in the business for being a good person to work for and had many long-term employees.

Ken is survived by his loving wife Linnea, sons Michael, Justin and Evan Ruffier, and a daughter Renee Reekie, along with his parents Sol Shulman and Eleanor Campbell Shulman and three brothers.

A Celebration of Ken's life will be held on Thursday, August 9 at 3 p.m. at Armitage Park, site "H". All those who knew Ken are invited to attend. Ken would want us to be comfortable, so wear casual attire or your work clothes.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Greenhill Humane Society, SPCA or the Children's Miracle Network.

We are just SO saddened (and stunned!) to JUST learn of Ken's passing...We had tried to no avail to reach him several times....and had thought perhaps he had moved away, though it would not be like him to leave without first contacting us as we have been LONG time clients of his and he is always SO helpful, accomodating, KIND...and understanding....We thought ALOT of Ken! Both as a person and as a TOP notch painter....We were undoubtedly out of town when his obituary was printed....and we did not know of his death...We finally called Rodda paint to find out his whereabouts and were shocked to learn of his death..We send our (very late) sincere condolences to his wife and his family....He was a very special man and we will miss him a great deal!

Ken was my neighbor in Fargo, we lived next door to the Shulman's beginning in 1966. With four boys there was always excitement going on at their house. We had political debates going in 1968, Ken with his McCarthy stickers and us with our Nixon stickers. They had the "Politics Room" the glassed-in porch plastered with campaign stickers.
I recall one episode as kids, Ken was returning from Synagog on a Saturday, he had on a suit and looked real dapper. Somehow I had an aerosol can of red spray paint, an axe and a chopping block...I hollered 'Hey Kenny look' he saw the axe, the paint and my intent, and said "nooooooo...!!!" Wham!... red spray all over both of us, Red freckles on his face, his hair, his suit, and shoes. Boy was Mrs Shulman mad.
There were other boyhood adventures that are from a simpler time, and place, our Fargo.

A few days ago I returned home to these shocking news about Ken. Knowing him from way back when in 1986 when my friends and I first came to Eugene, we had some truly great times together! I will always remember the fun we had in Mill Street as well as the contact we had over the years since then. Thanks, Ken, for always being there. You will be deeply missed! My deepest sympathy to Ken's family and friends.

We where truly shocked by the message that Ken has left us so totally unexpected! Since we first met in Mill in 1986 in Mill St, Ken has always been there as a very good friend. We have kept continuous contact through the years despite the distance and he even called on Christmas eves to Oslo for a chat... SIMPLY GREAT! And when visiting Eugene in 1999 with my family it goes without saying that Ken and Linnea was there with an open invitation to their home.
We would like to share our deepest sympathies with Linnea, their kids and Kens parents.

I was suprised and saddened to learn of Ken's death. We went to high school together and were friends. He nicknamed himself "Joe Cloopie" and I called him "Joe" most of the four years we were friends. I recall Ken's wonderful sense of humor, which can be a tough thing to have in high school! He was a good kid - not a mean bone in his body. He helped me out with history and science and I listened to him practice his speeches for Speech Club during study halls. Ken would stop to help kids (myself included) in the hallways, making himself late to class. He would stroll into the classroom with the most elaborate and entertaining excuses, giving everyone, including the teacher, an opportunity to laugh. He was a good friend - always a smile on his freckled face, helpful and respectful. I'm sorry I didn't know Ken as an adult because, from what I have read, it sounds as though he grew to be an even better version of his younger self. My deepest sympathies to his family.

It is with great sadness that I hear of Ken's passing. He and I go back many years to the "old neighborhood" in Normal Illinois. Deb and I will keep Kenny and his family in our thoughts.

I am very sorry to hear of Ken's Passing, I use to talk to him on a regular basis when I worked at Rodda Paint Co. Even though it was business - it surely did not feel like it. He may have been a customer, but he was a friend first and could always make me laugh.. He will never be forgotten.

Ken was loved by so many. I was fortunate to know him, albeit briefly, and to learn of all the ways he was an amazing friend to John and others. His love and spirit live on in the memories of all of us. My deepest condolences to Ken's family, friends, children, and of course, Ginger.

In the book of love's own dream
Where all the print is blood
Where all the pages are my days
And all my lights grow old
When I had no wings to fly
You flew to me
