Michael Kelly Obituary

Michael Allan Kelly

1943 - 2017

After a long and courageous battle with kidney failure and cholangiocarcinoma, Michael A. Kelly died on June 19, 2017, at his home and with his family in Springfield, Oregon. Mike was born in Los Angeles, California to parents Robert E. Kelly and Marjorie J. Adair Kelly. Mike spent his childhood in Southern California. While attending Anaheim High School from 1958-1961, he lettered in football, track, swimming, and water polo. He loved the beach and spent countless hours surfing the waves off the California coast. Mike graduated from Anaheim High in 1961.

After high school, Mike competed on the track team at Fullerton Junior College for 2 years before transferring to Oregon State University on a track scholarship. In 1964, he wed Judy J. (Dilley) Kelly, his high school sweetheart, and they moved to Corvallis, Oregon. Mike earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering in June 1967. Mike's college buddies introduced him to hunting and fishing in the Northwest, two activities that became Mike's passion throughout his life and enticed Mike to stay in Oregon after completing his engineering program.

Mike started his career with the City of Springfield working on the survey crew. He continued working for the city of Springfield for the next 38 years, working up the ranks in city government. He spent the last 16 years of his career as Springfield City Manager. During these years, Mike also served on the Jasper Mountain Board of Directors, was a member and past president of Rotary and the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, and participated in many community service projects and volunteer activities. He was a dedicated city employee who loved the community where he worked and raised his family. Although Mike was proud of his many career and volunteer accomplishments, he would often say he was most proud of his role as a father to his 3 children.

Mike is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy (Dilley) Kelly; his children: Colleen Kelly (Jack Voth), Shannon Kelly Hagengruber (Daniel), and Ryan Kelly (Jenna); grandchildren: Autumn, Grant, Zachary, Brytan, Grace, Rylan; his brothers: Bob Kelly and Rick Kelly; and his sister, Susan Sessions. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Mark Timothy Kelly.

There will be a public memorial service on Friday July 7, 2017, at 11 a.m. The service will be held on the Mike Kelly field located at the Bob Keefer Center for Sports and Recreation at 250 S. 32nd Street in Springfield, Oregon. For those planning to attend the service, the family recommends casual clothing and sunglasses.

Memorial contributions can be made to Jasper Mountain/SAFE Center or Willamalane Park Foundation.

Judy and family. I'm so sorry I wasn't able to make it to Mike's service. My eldest son was getting married the same day, you know that little 6 year old boy that came to city hall when I was city councilor in 1998. One of the best men I knew. Sid Leiken, Springfield Mayor, 2000-2010

Judy and Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Mike was an amazing man. He was such a wonderful leader and asset to our community. He was a considerate leader to the City of Springfield employees. I especially enjoyed working with both of you at Pacific Cascade FCU. I am so sorry I was unable to attend his memorial service as I was out of town. My thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Judy and family, we have faith that God has a plan for taking the good ones home sooner than we're ever ready for. Mike's character was one to be admired and respected and we will rest in knowing that his legacy with Springfield and it's citizens will last for many many years. He never waivered in doing the right thing. Above all, we know much his family meant to him... he loved all of you so much. We are so thankful that our tenure with the City of Springfield was with Mike. He set the bar high... Bless you all during this time and know that should you need anything, we are here for you.
