Olive Simmons Obituary

Olive Mae

Simmons

April 25, 1921 -

September 2, 2017

Olive Mae Simmons passed away peacefully September 2, 2017 at the age of 96, with her nephew Chuck Simmons by her side. She is now with her Lord Jesus. She was married to Bert M. Simmons for 52 years; he preceded her in death.

Olive was born in Nash, Oklahoma. She was raised in several small towns in Kansas and Nebraska. She married Bert in New Jersey in 1946 at the end of World War II; they moved to Portland, Oregon the same year, and then to Eugene in 1949.

Olive was a member of First Baptist Church in Eugene for almost 70 years. She and her husband Bert both had a passion to serve their Lord Jesus through supporting many different missionaries, providing hospitality for them in their home, and putting on chalk programs with Bible themes at many smaller town and country churches. They were both musically talented and used their gifts of singing and piano playing to bless others and bring the Gospel to people with Olive's artistic ability. In all this they raised two sons, both of whom went on to serve as pastors and missionaries on the home and foreign mission field.

In addition Olive taught a Child Evangelism Class in her home while raising her two sons. In later years she befriended and provided emotional and spiritual nurture to a number of women. She was a joyful, friendly, fun-loving, and godly example to many.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bert, and parents Ruben and Ora Hart and her siblings Genieva (Nieve), Rose, Ruben, Omer, Margaret, Alice, and Alfred (Bud).

Olive is survived by two sons: Rev. Dr. David Simmons and his wife Kathy of Remer, MN; and Rev. Dr. Daniel Simmons and his wife Alice of Rome, Italy. She is also survived by five grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Many thanks to the wonderful caregivers at Waterford Grand Assisted Living and the hospice team there that provided her with such skillful and compassionate care.

A Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church on Sunday, September 17, at 3:30 p.m. It will be preceded by a Graveside Service at 11 a.m. the same day at Lane Memorial Gardens, 5300 W. 11th in Eugene. Memorial gifts for Olive Simmons should be made out to First Baptist Church (3550 Fox Meadow Rd., Eugene 97408). All gifts will go toward the ministries of Camp Harlow.

Arrangements entrusted to Musgrove Family Mortuary. Please access the obituary and you are invited to sign the guestbook at musgroves.com.
