Robert Houglum Obituary

Robert (Bob) Lowell Houglum

1922-2007

Long-time radio broadcasting personality Bob Houglum passed away at the Hospice of the Valley Care Center in Surprise, AZ on Saturday, December 22, 2007.

Bob's radio broadcasting career spanned 40 years, beginning in Eugene, OR in August 1947, first at KASH radio and later at KUGN. In 1950 he put KIHR (Independent Hood River) station on the air. In 1952 he returned to KUGN where he eventually became the program director, In 1964 he and his wife Mimi partnered with Mrs. Trudy Kauffman to purchase KLOO radio in Corvallis.

Bob and Mimi aired the first "Toast and Coffee" show, a live morning call-in community and family oriented show on KLOO on April 15, 1964. The show aired every weekday morning. With Houglum, Bob Clark co-hosted the show until Pat Lafferty was hired in March, 1971. Houglum and Lafferty became well known for their top-rated show. "Toast and Coffee" owned the market in the Corvallis area for over 20 years.

In the 1980s Bob started another popular regular radio feature "Swing through the Past" which aired Saturday mornings at 11 a.m.

After Bob's retirement on July 31, 1987, he and his wife Carol moved to Silverton, OR. In 1997 they moved to Sun City West, AZ, where he lived the rest of his life.

Bob was a creative artist and ham radio operator. His paintings grace the homes of many family and friends. His smile, quick sense of humor and wit, his creativity, and fun-loving personality will be sorely missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

Bob is survived by his sister and brother-in-law Kit and Vic Clay of Carlsbad, CA, his sons and daughters-in-law Dan and Nancy Houglum of Klamath Falls, OR, and Mike and Lyla Houglum of Corvallis, OR, Carol Houglum of Sun City West, AZ, and her children Brian, Stacy, and Kyle, of Anchorage, AK, and Susan of Sacramento, CA, close friend and companion Ruth Ann Fisher of Sun City West, AZ, and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, friends and fans across the country.

At Bob's request, no services are planned. The family requests that in lieu of flowers and other memorials, donations in his memory be given to your local Hospice chapter. As Bob always ended his radio show, "Without you out there, we are no where here!"
