I remember Gene from reunions I attended with my dad, Louie Hoger. The members all held him in such high regard. A great spiritual witness.

Time does not dim in the least the memory of my dearest professor, Dr. Eugene J. Petersen. I think of him and speak of him often. The greatest compliment I ever received as a preacher was when a fellow missionary said, "You remind me of a professor I had at San Francisco Seminary." That professor was Dr. Petersen under whom I had studied at Detroit Baptist Seminary.

Dr. Petersen was my most beloved professor at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. When I was a missionary in Italy, Eugene Petersen's letters of encouragement often kept me going in spite of very difficult circumstances. When I thought of what he endured in WW II in France, I thought of how little I had to face. Yet Eugene also knew, as I do, that the spiritual battle in this life is the most formidable. Eugene's ministry was always encouraging and uplifting. I loved him and I love him still! "And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." (John 11:26)

Dr. Petersen was such an inspiration to me at DBTS. He was always so encouraging and a pastor's pastor. We continued to talk over the years and his inspiration for serving the Lord continued. I just found out today that He had gone to be with the Lord. What an example of biblical manhood. This man was truly loved by my family and so instrumental in my life as a man.
Praying for wife and family.

Dr. Petersen was my history professor at the San Francisco Baptist Theological Seminary in 1970. Of all of the professors and teachers I had throughout my lifetime, he was unique and very much appreciated. He was humble and did not seek his own advantage or honor. Yet, he provided an inspiring living illustration of Christ, Who did not seek His own glory while serving His Father. Dr. Petersen was always encouraging, optimist about the Lord providing and honoring faithful service. We talked semi-regularly for decades; our last phone conversation was mid-July, just before he went Home. It was sad when I called recently and found a disconnected phone. It was a tremendous loss for me and for all who knew him. Yet, he is better off now in the presence of the Lord and I am happy for him. He surely has a good reward awaiting him for faithful, unpretentious, loving, encouraging service in the Lord. May all of us who knew him grow in our own walk with the Lord as we think back on his living example of a giant who was faithful and humble in Christ. He truly did not seek his own glory, but that of his Lord and Master, Jesus Christ.

I remember Dr. Petersen as a passionate preacher and lover of the souls of men. He was pastor of my church in Gridley, CA during a formative time in my life. I praise our God for his and his precious wife's faithfulness for so many years!

Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Petersen were among my best friends for almost 60 years. First he and Marjorie were Pastor and wife at
Trinity Baptist Church in Castro Valley, CA. He was also a Professor at San Francisco Baptist Theological Seminary and later at Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary. He kept in touch with all
his many friends and knew where his former students were and what they were doing with their education. My wife also knew and loved them for the past 52 years, the length of time we have been married. We counted him among the great "Pillars of the Faith" but was also the most humble man we knew. He will be greatly
missed.

Dear Marjorie & Steven:
How sad it was to hear of the Home going of my dear friend and brother in Christ, Eugene. By phone calls, letters and shareing time together at the reunions we soon learned we had something special in common , our love and service for the Lord.My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during your time of grief.

Dear Marjorie and family..... Dr. Petersen meant so much to my husband Ed, as a prof at DBTS and as a mentor and friend until Ed passed to glory in 2006. Dr. Petersen was kind enough to continue communication several times a year to be an encouragement. Dear Marjorie...God will be with u!!

I was very sad to hear of Eugene's death. All of us in the 70th Division will deeply miss him. He served us well as our chaplain and preached memorably at the annual service for our deceased members. We now will add his name to the honor roll at this year's convention and service. His passing grieves us all.
