Rev. Aaron M. Mackey Jr., 87, passed away Monday, September 5, 2011. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at New Light Baptist Church, 518 N. 6th Street. A visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at Abilene Funeral Home Chapel of Hope, 3349 N. 12th Street. Burial, with military honors, will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Carlsbad Cemetery in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Rev. Mackey was born November 4, 1923 in Bastrop County, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a decorated veteran. Rev. Mackey retired after 26 years of service from Eddy County, New Mexico. He was a District Moderator for the Jerusalem Baptist Association in New Mexico and was the 1st V.P. of the Jerusalem Baptist Association Board of Directors. He was in ministry for 62 years. Rev. Mackey was a Chaplin at the Middleton Unit in Abilene and was the pastor at Holiday Hills Baptist Church for the past 4 years. He was one of the last two Sr. statesmen of the Progressive West Texas Baptist Association.
Survivors include a son, James L. Mackey and wife, Tanya of Los Angeles, California; a sister, Lovie Simpson of E. St. Louis, Illinois; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Rev. Mackey was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Mackey; his parents, Luiza and Aaron Mackey Sr.; a son, Nathan Mackey; two brothers, Oza Mackey and Louis Mackey; and a sister, Leola Johnson.
