Gary Scruggs Obituary

Gary Scruggs

Abilene, TX

Gary Lee Scruggs, 53, went to be with the Lord Saturday, May 28, 2016, after a car accident near Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM, Thursday, June 2, 2016 at Beltway Park Church, South Campus in Abilene. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Under the direction of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.

Gary was born in Taylor, Texas to Joyce Ray and Joyce Ann Scruggs on February 7, 1963. He graduated from Thrall High School in Thrall, Texas in 1981. A successful rancher and entrepreneur, Gary was involved in several business ventures over the course of his life. He owned and operated Abilene Discount Moving and was involved in roadside contracting for the Texas Department of Transportation for counties across the state. He also raised cattle and rodeo livestock on acreage in both Abilene and Thrall.

Gary was a varsity football player while at Thrall High School, and often enjoyed reminiscing about his playing days with family and friends. He loved quality cattle, a strong diesel engine, a good steak, and above all, his family. A true country boy at heart, Gary is remembered by all as an earnest, hardworking man who never shirked a task, and as a capable leader, provider, husband, and father by his family and friends. He was a man of strong, simple faith whose love for the Lord was steadfast.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Joyce Ray Scruggs of Thrall; and his sister, Carol Davidson of Magnolia, Texas; and his father-in-law Julian J. Gilbert of Abilene.

He is survived by his wife, Gail; his mother Joyce Ann Scruggs of Thrall; his mother-in-law Virginia Gilbert of Abilene; his daughter Brittany White and husband Dr. Matthew White and their daughters Hadleigh, Lainey Mae, and his first grandson due in September; his daughter Hayden Jordan and husband Dr. Jaxon Jordan; his son Jake Scruggs of Abilene; his two brothers Michael Scruggs of Thrall, and Greg Scruggs and his wife Deniece Scruggs of Thrall; his sisters Sharon Parker and husband Gaylon Parker of Taylor, and Cindy Stasny of Taylor, and Sheila Susan of Thrall; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers for the service will be Aaron Hocking, Daniel Hocking, Cody Burns, Heath Scruggs, Kollen Scruggs and Kory Scruggs.

The family requests donations be made in Gary's honor to Life Today: Water for Life, Narrow Gate Foundation, and Missions at Beltway Park Church.
