Keith Steiner Obituary

Keith Steiner, 63, of Rexburg, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at his home.
Keith was born March 14, 1945 to Rulon and Angeline Steiner in Rexburg, where he was raised, and graduated from Madison High School in 1963.
He received his Bachelor's of Science in sociology and political science and his master's of public administration in executive management from Brigham Young University.
Keith married Judy Casper of Rigby on March 29, 1968, in the Idaho Falls Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, and children Brian (Erica) Steiner of Smithfield, Utah, Joanna (Rick) Kreifeldt of South Jordan, Utah, Lynette Steiner of Roberts, Melanie (Alan) Gordon of Vernal, Utah, and Kelli (Brett) Lindsey of South Jordan, Utah; and 14 grandchildren who adored him. He is also survived by siblings Blaine (Verlene) Steiner of Antioch, Calif., Marilyn (Dahl) Gulbransen of Federal Way, Wash., and Farrell (Stacy) Steiner of Ammon. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Braydon.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the West German Mission. He held many positions in the church, including bishop, member of a High Council and at the time of his death, was serving with his spouse as a Cub Scout leader and as an ordinance worker at the Rexburg Temple.
Keith enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Some of his happiest times were spent outdoors with his family golfing, four-wheeling, camping, fishing and hiking.
Keith devoted his career to the health care field. During his 32 years as CEO of Madison Memorial Hospital, he fulfilled his vision of providing the highest quality healthcare to the community. In that time, he oversaw several expansion projects and assisted in recruiting numerous specialists and physicians resulting in greatly expanded services.
Keith served on many local, state and national councils, committees and task forces in health care over the years, including the American Hospital Association and the Idaho Hospital Association. He was very involved in the community and served as president of the Rexburg Chamber of Commerce and Rotary International.
Keith received many awards and recognitions throughout his career, including the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year (1985) and Businessman of the Year (2006) and was the recipient of the prestigious Star Garnet Award from the Idaho Hospital Association (2007).
Although he received numerous awards throughout his career, his greatest joy came from his time spent with his family.
His own words summarize it best: "I hope all the public service I have given so far in life has helped others enjoy a better quality of life. I choose to measure my quality of life by having my sweet eternal companion at my side, five beautiful children who make me so proud and grandchildren who allow me to laugh, cry and play."
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at the Rexburg North Stake center, 314 E. Second North, with Bishop Dane Dickson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, prior to services in the church. Interment will be at the Rexburg Cemetery.

Dear Judy and Family,
I was sad to hear of Keith's passing and remembered how much it meant to me to receive a card from you when my own husband died. He is such a good man and was a kind and considerate boss to me during the four years I worked at the hospital. This current pain will ease with time and you are much loved and respected as was your good husband. I pray for your healing.

My deepest sympathy to the Steiner family. Sixteen years ago as a student at Ricks College I met Keith and he encouraged me to have a career in rural healthcare administration. I am now a CEO of a rural hospital and I give credit to Keith for his encouragement and support.

Dear Judy and Family:

Nola and I were very saddened to hear of Keith's passing. When I came to Rexburg just over 30 years ago, he was one of the first people I worked with professionally. I appreciated his patience with me as I learned about the health care profession. It was apparent that he loved what he did, including all of the staff at the hospital and the patients as well.

He did remarkable things for health care both in Rexburg and through the larger state and national arena through his work. Since moving to Idaho Falls we have had many friends who would drive to Rexburg for hospital stays because they knew they would be taken care of as they should.

More importantly, I particularly enjoyed the all-too-brief time I spent with him in (what was then) a Ricks College bishopric. He really loved the kids in the ward as well as those of us who had the pleasure of serving with him. He was a blessing to all of us. I have thought many times since then what an enjoyable experience that was! He will be missed by all who knew him.

All of our best wishes, thoughts and prayers go to you and your family.

Our deepest sympathies to you, dear Steiner Family. We were so sorry to hear of Bishop Steiners death. We loved him not ony as a wonderful Bishop, but also as a sweet friend and health care associate. From our first days in Rexburg, Bishop Steiner took Rob under his wing and helped him gain acceptance among fellow business associates there. Rob would never have accomplished what he did without the help of Bishop Steiner. You are in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless you with his strength, peace and love.

Much Love, The Vande Merwe Family

Keith was a thoughtful and courteous person. He listened before he answered. I had meant to write and tell him how beautifully the new hospital had been landscaped, and what a beautifully integrated building it was in the community. He was an outstanding and good person.

Judy and family--we are so stunned. Keith was so looking forward to retirement to spend time w/ you after so many years "swimming against the tide".
