Larry Orme Obituary

Larry Don Orme, 86, of Ashton, died April 27, 2021, of natural causes. He was born February 16, 1935, in St. Anthony, Idaho, to Laurence and Vera Lonetta Johnson Orme.

He attended schools in Ashton and graduated from North Fremont High School. He then attended Utah State College in Logan, Utah.

Larry married Deanna Sommer on June 25, 1959, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They made their home in Squirrel where they raised their seven children.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served as a Branch President, Bishop, in Bishoprics, and often as ward and stake clerk.

He was called to the Northern Far East Mission from 1955 to 1958. During his three-year mission, he served in Japan and was also sent with the first seven missionaries to open the Korean mission. He became fluent in both the Japanese and Korean languages.

Larry served in the Army National Guard and Ready Reserve during the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge in 1963.

Larry was a lifetime cattleman and farmer. He also raised and sold registered Quarter Horses. He lived his whole life in Ashton and Squirrel, Idaho, where he owned and operated Highland Ranch after his father died. This ranch has been in the family since 1911, and is now owned and operated by his eldest son, Ryan Don Orme.

Larry served as chairman of the Farm Service Agency for nine years. He served on the board of the Federal Land Bank for nine years. He also served on the Fremont County Fair Board, the Fish and Game Advisory Board, and was secretary and president of the Squirrel Meadows Cattle Association. He was the Range Rider for the Squirrel Meadows Cattle Association for 18 years.

He loved to garden, do leatherwork, cook, and take his grandchildren on horse rides.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna; his children: Kim (Mike) Steinmann, Shawna (Jim) Boles, Ryan (Janell) Orme, Greg (Raegan) Orme, Brad (Daedre) Orme, Elton (Jennifer) Orme, Kevin (Kelsi) Orme; siblings, Kirby (Susan) Orme, Diane (Brent) Stohl; brother-in-law, Haws Baum; 36 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Elton and Brian J.; sister, Elaine Baum; grandsons, Christopher Steimnann, Nic Steinmann, and Cole Orme; and an infant granddaughter, Maise Orme.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 3, at the Ashton 4th Ward Chapel, 1313 North 3600 East, in Ashton. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and Monday from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., both times at the church.

Interment will be in the Pineview Cemetery under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent online to the family at www.baxterfh.com.
