S. Loosli Obituary

S. Lynn Loosli was called home to his Heavenly Father on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, leaving behind a legacy of love, family and friends.
Lynn was born July 25, 1935, in St. Anthony to Stanley and Katie Loosli. He spent his early years on his family's farm. While growing up, Lynn says he had only one dream - becoming a farmer. He attended schools in Ashton, where he participated in football and basketball. Lynn was also active in the Future Farmers of America and received the prestigious National Star Farmer award. He was elected as a national vice president of the FFA, traveling all over the United States promoting the program. Lynn graduated in 1953 from North Fremont High School.
Lynn attended Utah State Agricultural College in Logan, Utah, and became a nominee for the Rhodes Scholar. Instead of taking this award, he continued in the agricultural field and graduated in 1957. That fall he entered the military to fulfill his ROTC commitment and then returned to Ashton to farm. His first project was raising 8 acres of potatoes, followed the next year by seven registered Hereford heifers. Lynn continued raising potatoes and cattle - just on a much larger scale.
On Dec. 19, 1956, he married Portia Reeves of Brigham City, Utah, in the Logan LDS temple. They became the parents of nine children.
Lynn was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a bishop in the Ricks College 18th Ward, a bishop's counselor and in various other church callings in his home ward.
In 2000, Lynn and his wife were called to serve in the Canada Halifax Mission. What a choice experience that was! They returned twice to Nova Scotia in the next few years to visit special friends they met there.
He served with his wife as an officiator in the Idaho Falls Temple for four years and was currently serving in the Rexburg Temple.
Lynn served for six years in the Idaho State Legislature for District 28 and served on several committees. He truly cherished that experience.
Lynn was active in many civic groups, including the Rotary Club, Republican Party and American Legion. He also served on numerous farming and irrigation boards, including the Committee of Nine for 12 years. In 1995, Lynn was inducted into the Agricultural Hall of Fame. Lynn also continued with his love of cattle and served on several boards. This year will be the 35th annual Loosli bull sale.
His great love was his wife, his children and their spouses, and especially his grandchildren. Lynn was always proud to tell everyone how wonderful they were. He often said, "There is hardly a day goes by that we don't hear something wonderful about them." He loved watching the local sports teams, especially when his children or grandchildren were involved.
Lynn is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Portia; children Kathryn (M.J.) Pritchett of Piedmont, Calif., Brian (Karen) Loosli of Ashton, Bruce (Connie) Loosli of Irvine, Calif., Michelle Loosli of Arlington, Va., Joel (Barbara) Loosli of Riverton, Utah, Jayne (Mel) Henderson of Falcon, Colo., Sara (David) Kimball of Helotes, Texas, Jared (Saren) Loosli of St. George, Utah, and Aaron (Michelle) Loosli of Salt Lake City; a sister, Carol (Barton) Jensen of Rexburg; a brother, Curtis (Marina) Loosli of Idaho Falls; and 29 grandchildren.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents and sister Gayle (Bob) Wynn of New Port Beach, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the Ashton LDS Stake center, 516 N. Second Street, with Bishop Lynn Ballard officiating. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the stake center, and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. also at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Pineview Cemetery under the direction of Baxter Funeral Home. Military rites will be conducted by the Ashton American Legion.

Dear Portia and Family,
What a great man he was and always will be. As a young high school athlete, he always made me feel like a superstar with his compliments after every game. As a worker at Dad's lumber yard, he treated me with respect and sincere interest. What a great posterity you have raised - all wonderful people. I know my dad counted Lynn not only as a very good friend, but viewed him with great respect and integrity.
Our prayers and thoughts are with all of you,
Doug and Vicki Evans

I am so sorry for not only the loss of your family but also the loss that the community is feeling right now. My father knew him very well, talked about him often, and attended many of his bull sales. I lost my father two weeks ago also and I know that they have resumed their friendship. I appreciated so much you attending my father's funeral. I am happy I was able to see and talk to Lynn again. These strong wonderful people are being called home to help prepare the way for the rest of us, I am sure. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time.

I do not have a childhood memory of Ashton without Lynn in it. It was such a good man. So kind and patient with us city kids that didn't know anything about farming.
I will miss him.

Brian, my heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Gene Clark told me last night of your father's passing. Although I didn't know Lynn well, I always enjoyed his happy and joyous attitude, a man who was truly happy with his life. He has left a great legacy in his family and his accomplishments. I feel privileged to have known him.

Dear Kathryn and family,

I just remember the rich, wonderful feeling of welcome at your home when we played UNO and stayed overnight after skiing at Big Sky. Your father made me feel so important, allowing me to help with the bull sale! I've never forgotten it. So sorry to hear about your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Portia and cousins,

I was saddened to hear of Lynn's passing. He was like a brother to my mom. I will always remember him as kind and strong. I can still see him with my dad helping a Japanese tourist wade back across the Henry's Fork below Upper Meas Falls. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Portia and family--Glenys and I were deeply saddened to learn of Lynn's passing. Having the opportunity to work for him as a youth taught me valuable lessons about work, discipline, values, and priorities. He has always held a special place in my heart, and I've always considered him to be a great friend, and a great example.

You and the entire family are in our thoughts and prayers.

With deepest sympathy,
