Brian Mirch Obituary

Brian Joseph Mirch, 47, of Reno, NV. loving father, son, brother, uncle, cousin, godfather and friend, passed away recently. Brian attended St. Albert the Great Elementary School, Clayton Junior High, Reno High School and the University of Nevada, Reno, where he earned a Bachelor's of Arts degree in accounting as well as a Master's Degree in Business Administration.
Brian used his business expertise as a budget analyst for Washoe County for many years, where he was instrumental in identifying and suggesting programs to cut waste in governmental spending.
Brian always had a passion for sports, swimming in particular. He swam in Mission Viejo, CA and competed in the Iron Man Triathlon in Hawaii, Olympic trials and numerous other triathlons throughout the country. In addition, Brian participated regularly in swimming challenges such as the Alcatraz and Bay to Breakers swims in San Francisco, CA. Brian also had a special talent in teaching swimming to the very young. Many parents thanked Brian for the water safety he instilled in their toddlers, which had later proven to be life saving. Brian passed his love for the water to his students, young and old, many of whom themselves went on to compete.
After retiring from Washoe County, Brian continued his passion for sports, and continued to enjoy swimming, biking, and golfing with his son, Jake. Brian is survived by his son, Jake, (Jake has the loving support of his mother, Lynn Belli, and Grandmother Nancy Sault). Also, surviving Brian are his parents, Ken & Kathleen Mirch, brothers, Ken Mirch (Linda) & Kevin Mirch (Marie), sisters, Theresa Ammerman (Earl), Mary Joannides (Barry) & Anne Mirch; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Rosary will be held Thursday June 3, 2010 at 6:00 PM, and Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. June 4th 2010, both at St. Albert's Catholic Church, 1250 Saint Albert's Drive, Reno, NV. Memorials preferred to trust fund at First Independent Bank of Nevada (5335 Kietzke Lane, Reno), established to benefit Brian's son, Jake Mirch.

Brian was a good friend since college, and someone I knew also as a reporter at the Legislature. Reading the other entries, it's clear how much of a positive effect Brian had on all of the people he knew and worked with. My thoughts go out to the Mirch family, and especially his son Jake and ex-wife Lynn. This is a loss that we will all feel for all of our lives. But we will remember the warmth, humor, intelligence and pure fun that he was and is.

Jake, Lynn and the Mirch Family,
Brian came to the County organization at a time when it needed "out-of-the-box" thinking to deal with budget and financial management issues. Brian's thoughtful consideration, his humor, strength, wit and new reality helped re-make county government a better opportunity for the future. We laughed, we teased, we took the serious nature of governance and forced a new way of looking at old and new problems. The passion of his love of swimming, running and biking was important in his ability to effectively communicate. Thanks, Brian, for some of the more memorable years at work. Regards, Press

Brian patiently taught me to swim when I was in my 40's so I could strengthen my back. I've benefited from that knowledge for almost 20 years and every time I think about swimming I thank Brian. Brian was a wonderful friend. He taught my grandchildren to swim, and he helped me create the Collections Division for Washoe County, a program that brought millions of unsecured debts into the County's bank account. Without Brian's help, vision, and expertise this program would never have been successful. Brian was one of the brightest men I've ever known. it is an understatement to say: " he was instrumental in identifying and suggesting programs to cut waste in governmental spending." Brian is one of the few government employees to ever produce more than he took. I will be forever grateful for his help in my professional life, and for his warm personal touch that was felt by my entire family. This is a tragedy, and I am one who will miss him every day.
