Brian Spell Obituary

Brian Alexious Spell

San Francisco, CA - Brian Alexious Spell was born Sept. 15, 1945 in San Francisco. He passed away January 24, 2021. At the age of 11, he moved to South Carolina to live with his grandparents. He helped his grandfather on his farm, and from this he gained a life-long love of gardening. After graduating from high school, Brian was headed to Alaska to work. On the way, he stopped in Reno to visit his mother and spent the next 52 years there. He married his first wife Karen Johnson with whom he had his two daughters, Kathleen Marie and Kristene Ann. He was an accomplished bricklayer, and loved to drive around town showing off his handiwork at the various places he had helped build. He also was proud to be a member of the Reno Fire Department for 28 years. After three years together, he married his 2nd wife Cathy Andrade in 1977 with whom he was married to until 1983. Cathy was a great stepmother to his daughters. His passion in life, other than his two daughters, was hunting and fishing. Every chance he got he would take off to the backroads of Nevada. He was also a wonderful storyteller. On a long road trip the words "Please tell us another story!" would be heard more often than "Are we there yet?". In 1987 he started dating Marty Erickson who brought her four boys, Matt, Mark, Mike and Brian to the relationship. They eventually married in 2000. Dad enjoyed having 4 stepsons. He loved taking the boys camping and teaching them to fish and hunt. With his two daughters and four step sons he ended up with a very large family that loved him. He spent the last four years in Sacramento in the loving care of his daughter Kris. She had wonderful help and support from her boyfriend Brian Braunwart, her daughter Katelyn and her boyfriend Ryan Juba. He is survived by his sister Sue and her husband Larry, sister Ann and her husband Peter, daughter, Kat, her two children, Stefan and Kelsie, his daughter Kris and her two children, Austin and Katelyn, and four great granddaughters, Ryan, Kallie, Karissa and Keira. Stepson Matt and his wife Mariah, Mark, Mike, Brian and his wife Stacy. Eight step grandkids, Joey, Tess, Ethan, Emma, Winston, Hayden, Kendall and Cole. No services are planned, but feel free to have a toast in Brian's memory.

Your daughter, Kat

January 23, 2024

It´s been 3 years today. I didn´t call you while I was in the hospital with Covid because I didn´t want you to worry. I will regret that decision for the rest of my life. I miss you so much. I still can´t believe I´ll never again get a phone call from you saying "Hi Kat, this is your dad." I can´t wait til we meet on the other side. 2021 was the worst year of my life. It still seems like yesterday. I love you forever, my hero, my dad.

Me and my hero 1968, Reno Fire Department

My Dad Brian was my hero in every sense of the word. Being a firefighter, he was gone a lot. Once when I was 6, I wanted him to come home from work, so I lit our back fence and rose bush on fire. Never dawned on me that we lived in Sparks and he worked for Reno. Boy, did I get in trouble.
So many great memories of Dad. Throwing us in Frenchman's Lake (with life vests on) to teach us to swim. His stories of the practical jokes the firefighters played on each other. So many camping trips, campfires, ghost stories, breakfast cooked in a cast iron frying pan. Dad teaching us fun safety, teaching us to shoot, teaching us to fish, teaching my kids to fish. My fondest memories I keep to myself. I may be in my 50's but he was my daddy and I adored him as much as a daughter can adore her father. He was, is and will always be my hero and I will miss him every day for the rest of my life. Until we meet again, Dad, raise hell up there with Boomer, Sox and your buddies who made it there before you. I love you.

We enjoyed our visit to Reno and meeting Brian. We had a good time with him at the casino and going out to eat. He had a good sense of humor and was fun to be with. May all your memories of him help to ease the pain of losing him. God bless you and your family.
