Charles Denham Obituary

Charles Denham

January 28, 1925

March 15, 2014

Charles "Chuck" Denham, 89, died March 15, 2014. The youngest of five children, he was born January 28, 1925, in Stanford, Kentucky, to Charles Jasper and Lulu (Young) Denham. He held fond memories from growing up on a Kentucky family farm such as drinking cool water from a spring, and riding in a horse-drawn wagon with his father. He graduated from McKinney High School in Stanford and served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater on the USS Chilton during WW II. After a few years as a civilian, he rejoined the military. He completed USAF flight training and served as a pilot in the Korean War. He earned battle stars in WWII and Korea. He flew C-119, B-47, B-58 Hustler, and other aircraft. He attained the rank of Lt. Colonel and served in the Strategic Air Command before retiring in 1968.

Following his retirement from active duty, he served as a test pilot for Boeing, and later a pilot for Executive Jet, Japan Airlines and others. He worked for the FAA in Stockton, CA and then retired. He enjoyed fishing, walking, attending reunions, and listening to Ray Price, Roy Clark and Chet Atkins. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Arkansas Polytechnic. He married Alice Jane Quandt in 1953, who survives. In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters Jane, Rena, and Lynn; a son, Timothy; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Roy and Leslie and his sisters Dolly and Rachel, as well as his step siblings.

The family thanks Mita Home Care for all the comfort they provided Charles.

A memorial service will be held March 28 at 2 pm at the North Virginia Street Church of Christ. Private interment will be held at Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Fernley, NV.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Charles to Veterans Guest House, 880 Locust St, Reno, NV 89502.

Thank you for all your condolences and memories. It feels so good to know that he inspired some great memories with each of you. As normal as it is to feel conflicted about one's own father, it is nice to know that those good memories are echoed in others and it helps erase the silly bad memories. In the end, we can only hope to be remembered for the little bits of kindness we sow among other people. Go out, if you feel inclined, and do something out of kindness in my father's memory. Thank you again and blessings upon you.

I remember Charles and my farther (Carl Denham) were very close and had a few WW-2 stories, not to mention the fly by on Green River. A Good Man.

I remember Mr. Denham from my days as a young man, when we all went to the same church. I'll never forget the small-airplane ride on which he took me during that time. He was a good man.
