Dorothy Stevenson Obituary

DOROTHY BLANCHARD STEVENSON

June 27, 1935

November 11, 2015

Dorothy's story began on June 27, 1935 in Fallon, NV. She was the only daughter born to Reuben and Bobbie Blanchard. Although her father wanted to name her "Frankie", her mother was able to convince him that Dorothy was a more appropriate name. Dorothy joined her two brothers, Eddie and Richard, and shared many adventures on their grandparents' farm with their Blanchard, Lee, and Lish cousins, aunts, and uncles.

Dorothy's family moved to Reno in 1942. She attended school at Orvis Ring Elementary School, Northside Junior High School, and Reno High School. During her school years, Dorothy developed life long friendships with many. Those friendships grew stronger as the years went by. Dorothy was active at Reno High School and reflected on her high school years and being a Reno High Huskie cheerleader with great pride. Dorothy met and married Grant Anderson in high school. Their union brought Dee Lynn, Jodi, Butch and Karen into the world. Dorothy cherished the role of mother and caregiver to her four children.

Dorothy was very proud of her work experience with Hales Drug Store and then with Washoe County School District as a school secretary at Anderson Elementary School and Reno High School. In 1976 Dorothy transferred to the "Green House" (Washoe County School District Administrative Offices) where she helped establish the Central Substitute Office. Dorothy enjoyed placing substitute teachers in positions and often was instrumental in launching teaching careers.

Dorothy met her neighbor, Percy "Steve" Stevenson in June 1990. Dorothy and Steve were married on January 1, 1991. Their marriage was one for the ages. They were able to travel around the United States, Hawaii, and Canada. Their most favorite vacations were in Disneyland with their grandchildren. Dorothy and Steve were supportive of all of their grandchildren's events from school awards and plays, to sporting events, to graduations, and to birthday celebrations. Dorothy's family was everything to her. She made sure her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren knew how much she loved them. Her smile, her hugs, and her kisses will live on with us forever.

Dorothy's journey into heaven occurred on November 11, 2015 peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family. Dorothy is now reunited with her love, Steve; her parents, Reuben and Bobbie; her brother, Eddie; and her loving Auntie Jo, Uncle Bill, and Aunt Rosie.

Dorothy is survived by her four children and their spouses, Dee Lynn and Mark Armstrong, Jodi and Jerry Smith, Butch and Susan Anderson, and Karen and John Simms; her step-daughter and spouse, Rosemary and Jerry Withen. Dorothy's precious grandchildren are Sean Foley, Brian Foley, Jason Simms (Corey), Adam Jones, Ross Armstrong, Scott Anderson (Lauren), Alyson Howe (Kyle), David Anderson, Kendra Tuttle (Trae), Tyler Simms (Kimi), Zachariah Simms, Sharlea Taft (John), Melissa Withem, and Morgan Withem. Dorothy was especially proud of her great-grandchildren; Kylan McHardy-Anderson and Hailey Anderson, JD Taft, Madelynn and Lucy Howe, and Charlie Tuttle. Dorothy's survivors also include her brother Richard Blanchard and her uncle Thad Blanchard, along with an extensive family of many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dorothy's family would like to thank Dorothy's dear friends, Jackie Powers, Joanie Gardner, and Nancy Slatin; the care givers with Gentiva Hospice, the staff and friends at 5* Premier Residence, Dr. Perez and his staff, and her church family at Spanish Springs Presbyterian Church.

Please join Dorothy's family for a Celebration of Life on November 21st at Hidden Valley Country Club from 2pm to 5pm with a Remembrance Service beginning at 3pm. A private family service will be held at Dorothy's gravesite.

Dorothy was one of the kindest persons I have ever known. She and her entire family had an extremely positive influence on me at a time in my life when I needed it most. I will never forget that, nor her. My thoughts and condolences are with and to her family.

Dorothy was a wonderful lady and good friend. We first met in 1942 at Orvis Ring and shared school rooms for the next 12 years. Our families remained close forever. Her smile and personality will be greatly missed, she was one of a kind.

There are some people in life you wish everyone could experience; for everyone's lives would be greatly impacted and the world would be a better place. Dorothy shined with a radiant smile and loving embrace. She will be missed, especially at the reunions, but as I look to the sky, I think the heavens just got a little bit brighter.

Dorothy was a very special person in my life. When my mother died she was one of many who pitched in and helped raise me. Then as an adult I was a substitute teacher and she would assign us to our jobs for the day. I got many calls from her at 4:30 in the morning. At that point I got to know her as an adult and I loved her sense of humor. I am only sad that I have not had any contact in many years now. My thoughts are with all of you.

Dorthy was a wonderful person. She and Steve were very active in their church and could always be counted on to help in many ways. She continued serving after Steve's passing and was always pleasant and kind to everyone she encountered

We will miss her greatly.

A great lady to have known.

Doreen and I have known Dorothy since our kids were in high school at Reno H.S. We really got to know her when we became members of Spanish Springs Presbyterian Church. We admired her for her love of and dedication to the families at SSPC and for all the work she did at the Church, always with love and a big smile. We will miss her very much.

Aunt Dorothy has always made me feel like I could conquer anything in this world; her kind and loving words were there during the darkest and lightest times in my life. I appreciated her letters and phone calls throughout my life and especially the last two phone calls. She advised me to not get depressed over my chronic illness, but to embrace life and give the contributions I was intended to give when God put me on earth. I intended to do that as I am not one that gives up easily, but knowing she believed in me and still does, watching me from a higher place, I will continue to strive to do my best and be a giving and loving person as my Aunt Dorothy. I will miss her, but I do know her well enough to remind myself what Aunt Dorothy would say to me at all times and situations, and that sustains me. I lover her deeply and always will respect her for her strength.

I only have fond memories of Dorothy. Her daughter Jodi and I were best friends throughout our childhood. The Andersons lived down the street and I spent many hours in their home. I remember Dorothy would pile all the kids in her Rambler and we'd take off to do errands. She was like a second mom to me while growing up and I have and will always remember her as a loving and giving person. My thoughts and especially my prayers are with all the family.
