Gregory Pari Obituary

Gregory Severino Pari

March 4th, 1961

May 3rd, 2015

Gregory Severino Pari Ph.D. was born in Providence RI and attended North Providence High School. He received an Associates Degree at the Community College of RI before completing a BA in Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1985. Greg worked in the lab of his good friend Dr. Stephen St. Jeor at the University of Nevada Reno and received his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology in 1990. He then moved to Albany NY where he continued to work on herpes DNA replication, becoming a leader in the field. After completing his post doctoral work at the State Department of Health he moved to Hybridon Inc. where he was involved with a drug discovery program for viral infections. He returned to UNR in 1999 and from 2010 held the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology. Greg was a delightfully outgoing and friendly person who treated everyone equally. He was direct, unpretentious, and was always happy, positive and upbeat. He had a wonderful personality that could fill a room, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Greg was an avid runner, enjoyed lifting weights, and was very health conscious. The irony of this is that he had a heart attack. Just before he underwent bypass surgery he joked with those around him that they should never exercise and should eat nothing but hamburgers and hotdogs because living a healthy lifestyle was greatly overrated. Greg's ability to find humor in any situation stayed with him right up until the end. Greg is survived by his beloved wife Karyn, his mother Dorothy DeMarco, his two sisters Rhonda Pari and Cindy Noreau and his nephew Duane Noreau. There will be a memorial service on June 3rd in the Milt Glick Ballroom C, Fourth Floor. Joe Crowley Student Union, University of Nevada, Reno

Maybe Our Paths Will Cross One Day,

I did not know Gregory personally. In fact, I only learned of his life and recent passing through a chance meeting with one of his sisters on a Southwest Airlines flight from San Diego to Reno. She was flying up to meet other family members and friends to celebrate Greg's life at his memorial service at UNR.

Meeting her and spending those ninety minutes last Tuesday, June 02, was the brightest part of my week, for a couple of reasons.

We are all searching for something in life. She reminded me that we only have to look to our relationships with our family, close friends, and a few lucky others. That Greg prospered through his sense of direction, discipline, passion for life, love of family, and support from all of you, is no surprise. He will be remembered. All of you will see to that.

To Rhonda, it's okay to see the glass as being half full. Surround yourself with people who are inquisitive and sensitive to our human conditions. Maintain some balance in your life during your busy work weeks and don't hesitate being selfish occasionally.

Words cannot describe the emptiness I feel over the passing of my good friend Greg. Together with a few other friends we had a close bond through grammar school all the way through college. Greg was a kind, humorous big hearted guy who will be sorely missed. I remember like it was yesterday that he would be over my house torturing my dad who always had a smile on his face when Greg was over. God bless you my friend; now you can reunite with my dad and share some laughs.

Dear Rhonda: Peter and I were sad to hear of Greg's death. In my (now) 45th year of education and thousands of students, you and your brother are two we both remember. It was perhaps 10+ years ago that I saw Greg on Atwells Ave., and he told me of his academic accomplishments. How happy I was to hear his path in science. Although he left much too soon, his work alone is testimony to a life well-lived. I can "see" him now, bounding into Room 6, in contrast to your smooth, serene, ladylike manner. Both of you enhanced my life. Stay well, Rhonda. Sincerely, Mary Christian-Madden and Peter Madden

It has been so long since we'd seen each other, in Montreal in Auntie CarmelA's back yard with all the extended family.....but it took me back to when we lived with you all, after our move from Canada. The name of the street eludes me, but the memories are forever etched in my mind. Gregory was four years older than me, but I remember him as the happiest and funniest of characters.....such a loss. Condolences to his wife Karyn, Aunt Dorothy, Rhonda and Cindy. Time has drifted us far apart, but you all remain a distinct part of my memories. Love, Cousin Diane Zinno

My fond memories of my cousin Gregory are of when we were growing up and we all hung out together with our big Italian family. Our parents backyard gatherings and all us cousins having such fun together. Greg was the funniest of us all. Always made me laugh and always, always gave bear hugs. Even when we didn't want them. Lol
Those were the days...
Aunt Dot, Cousins Rhonda & Cindy, and Karen we haven't seen one another in quite some time but I'm so saddened about Greg's passing. Childhood memories never die. My deepest condolences.

We all hope to make a difference during our lifetime, and Greg certainly did that. His upbeat attitude and funny sense of humor have stayed with me since we all graduated from the C&B program in the early 90's. I don't think I've ever felt more pride and respect for a fellow classmate than the time I heard Greg became the chair of the program we graduated from. What a wonderful legacy. My thoughts go out to you, Karyn, Greg's family, and the entire C&B community at UNR.
